Arakaki new 'Iolani baseball coach
Jason Arakaki, who helped 'Iolani to four state titles as a pitcher and a pitching coach, will take over the Raiders' varsity program.
Arakaki, the 'Iolani junior varsity coach since 2001, replaces Dean Yonamine, who previously announced his retirement following this season. Arakaki was a pitcher on the Raiders' state title teams of 1987 and '88, and the pitching coach when the Raiders won in 1997 and '98.
No. 1 BYUH rolls to 22nd straight win
The Division II top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team warmed up for the PacWest championships by shutting out Grand Canyon 9-0 yesterday in Kailua-Kona.
The Seasiders (22-0) dropped just four games. It was the fourth consecutive shutout by BYUH and 19th of the season. The Antelopes dropped to 9-8.
» Led by Zora Vickova's 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, Hawaii Pacific blanked Dixie State 9-0, also at Kailua-Kona.
The Sea Warriors improved to 12-6, while the Red Storm dropped to 3-14.
» Chaminade, with three-set wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles, defeated Academy of Art 5-3 in another women's tennis match at Kailua-Kona.
The Silverswords (6-8) took two of three doubles matches against the Urban Knights (5-9).
Sea Warriors stay put in softball polls
Hawaii Pacific (33-9) remained at No. 2 in the NCAA Division II West Region poll and held on to No. 11 in the NFCA national poll announced yesterday.
The Sea Warriors are coming off a 10-6 road trip, where they won the Mizuno Tournament of Champions title at Turlock, Calif., for the first time. Should HPU stay at No. 2 in the region, the Sea Warriors will host a four-team subregional at their field, which will be renamed Howard A. Okita Field prior to tomorrow's noon doubleheader against Hawaii-Hilo.
