Man surrenders in stabbing

A 22-year-old man turned himself in at the Kalihi police station last night in the stabbing Friday of a 32-year-old man in Chinatown, police said.

Police arrested the man, who has no local address, on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder.

The arrest comes on the heels of an announcement by the police chief that he has beefed up the police presence to combat the gang violence and drug trafficking in Chinatown.

The stabbing victim, Antonius Toloai, 32, was reportedly in serious condition Friday when he was taken by private vehicle to the hospital.

Police did not have an update on his condition.

The stabbing appears to be in retaliation for the shooting death of Joseph Peneueta.

The stabbing suspect had earlier identified himself to the Star-Bulletin as a close friend of Peneueta's.

Laptop with personal data stolen

The state Department of Transportation says one of its laptop computers was reported stolen last month from a state office building in Kapolei.

The department said yesterday that the laptop contained the names, personal information and Social Security numbers of nearly 1,900 commercial vehicle drivers license holders.

Officials say there's no indication the confidential information has been used for illegal purposes.

However, the department has sent letters to those affected to notify them of the security breach. The letters also advise them of steps that can be taken to minimize the risk of identity theft.

Department Director Brennon Morioka says he regrets “;the very serious impact the missing information could have on so many individuals.”;

Driver, 76, killed after ramming tree

A 76-year-old Waialua man was killed when he crashed his white 1991 GMC truck into a tree yesterday morning on Kaukonahua Road.

The man reportedly was heading north on Kaukonahua Road when he veered off the roadway and drove head-on into a tree, Maj. Clayton Kau said.

Police said fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel had to extricate the man from the truck after the 10:50 a.m. accident. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The accident occurred two miles south of Farrington Highway on Kaukonahua Road.

This was the 21st traffic fatality on Oahu compared with 13 the same time last year.

Woman's death is apparent drowning

A 61-year-old Michigan woman apparently drowned in waters off the South Kona coast.

The victim has been identified as Donna Moran of Tecumseh, Mich.

At 1:13 p.m. yesterday, police received a report that a woman was in distress in the water off Pebble Beach and had cried out for help.

When officers arrived at the scene, Fire Department personnel were attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The woman was later pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital.

An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause of death. The case has been classified as a coroner's inquest.

WAIKIKI

Suspect arrested in 2 burglaries

Police arrested a 31-year-old Ewa Beach man yesterday for allegedly burglarizing a Waikiki area business and hotel in December.

Police said the man was seen on surveillance Dec. 1 removing a radio from a hotel storage room.

A nearby business also reported that property had been stolen from its storage room the same morning about an hour apart.

The man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary.

HONOLULU

Teen allegedly demands watch

Police arrested a 13-year-old boy who allegedly accosted a 9-year-old boy and tried to take his watch.

Police said the victim was walking home from school in Kalihi about 2:25 p.m. yesterday when the older boy confronted him and demanded his watch. When the younger boy refused, the teenager punched him in the stomach, police said.

The suspect then searched the victim's backpack, but fled empty-handed, police said.

The younger boy called police and identified the suspect via a yearbook photo, police said. Officers arrested the teen on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
