Rainbows, Spartans split twinbill

Hawaii was fortunate not to get swept in yesterday's doubleheader, but could have just as easily won both.

San Jose State battled back to win the nightcap when Trevor Gibson got Vinnie Catricala to ground out with the tying run on third, sealing a 3-2 victory over Hawaii at Les Murakami Stadium. It snapped UH's five-game winning streak.
The Rainbows took the first game 7-5 in front of a season-high 3,352 fans. Hawaii rallied from a three-run deficit, scoring five runs in the eighth for its first lead. Sam Spangler retired the side in the ninth to earn his second save.
The 'Bows (18-10, 2-1 Western Athletic Conference) eked out the win in the first game after drawing 10 walks by Spartans pitchers. Hawaii left 11 runners on base. Its only two runs before the eighth came on solo homers by Kevin Macdonald and Jeff Van Doornum.
“;We got a win that we pulled out because of our toughness, but I'm really disappointed how we played all day outside of the one inning,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;I guess we should feel good coming out of this with a split since we only did one inning of work offensively today.”;
Matt Roquemore got that big eighth inning going with a single and immediately scored on a double by Sean Montplaisir. Greg Garcia followed with a single and Ryan Morford's single drove in Montplaisir to make it 5-4.
After Catricala was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Macdonald's single up the middle scored Garcia and Morford to give Hawaii its first lead at 6-5.
The Rainbows added an insurance run on an RBI single by Kolten Wong. Spangler sent the Spartans (20-7, 1-2) down in order in the ninth.
Jared Alexander struggled in his third straight outing, allowing five runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. The Spartans took a 3-1 lead into the fourth and Tommy Gale's RBI single with one out chased Alexander after 58 pitches.
Harrison Kuroda came on and allowed an RBI single by Kyle Bellows to make it 5-1. But that would be all the Spartans would score.
Kuroda (4-1) kept the Rainbows in the game with 4 2/3 scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and retired eight of the last nine he faced.
“;Harry was the story of the game, putting up all those zeros and settling the game down,”; Trapasso said. “;That was huge because Jared struggled. He's got no off-speed command at all. He's a one-pitch guy and that pitch is up and good teams like (San Jose State) are going to hit it.”;
The Spartans quickly took back the momentum in the second game, capitalizing on an error by Garcia to score twice in the first.
“;We were still licking our wounds after that tough loss, but our guys showed good resilience bouncing back and then holding on,”; San Jose State coach Sam Piraro said.
Sisto went the distance and was only charged with one earned run and did not walk a batter. Like Kuroda in the opener, Sisto kept the 'Bows in it and they nearly pulled it out in the bottom of the seventh.
Ryan Shopshire, who tossed a four-hit shutout against Hawaii in his first collegiate start last year, worked into the seventh, but walked the first two in the inning. Gibson came on in relief and Garcia moved the runners into scoring position with a bunt.
Morford brought Roquemore in on a groundout and Christian Johnson moved to third to put the tying run 90 feet away.
With bases open, the Spartans elected to pitch to Hawaii's leading hitter. Catricala drove a 2-1 pitch right at second baseman Craig Hertler, who threw out Catricala to end the game.
“;We can't just expect to turn on a switch and squeak out a few late rallies like we have this year,”; Trapasso said. “;That's something that's not going to happen against good teams, and eventually you're going to hit a hard ball right at somebody like Vinnie did.”;
Shopshire improved to 2-1 for the season, allowing three hits and two runs in six innings despite six walks.
“;He had three pitches that he had going,”; Piraro said. “;I wanted him to get a complete game because I thought that'd be great for his confidence, but he got a little tired, so we had to go to the bullpen.”;
