First WAC tennis wins for UH men

The Hawaii men's tennis team shut out Idaho and Utah State yesterday to pick up its first victories in Western Athletic Conference play.

In yesterday's first match, the Warriors, ranked 63rd, blanked the Vandals 7-0 at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif. Hawaii won all six singles matches—four in straight sets—and earned the doubles point when taking two of three matches.

The Warriors (5-7, 2-1) doubled their WAC win total when sweeping the Aggies 7-0. Hawaii won all nine matches, including five straight-set wins in singles.

 

'Iolani soccer focus at QB Club

Chris Lee, who led 'Iolani to its first state title in boys soccer, and player of the year Brock Granger of the Raiders are the featured speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club monthly luncheon meeting.

Also speaking will be Honolulu Advertiser sports writer Stephen Tsai.

Lunch at the Pagoda Hotel's International Ballroom is at 11:30, followed by the noon program. The event is open to the public.

 

HPU advances at softball tournament

The 18th-ranked Hawaii Pacific softball team finished second in its pool to advance to today's championship bracket of the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.

The Sea Warriors (30-8) face CSU Monterey Bay (25-20) in a quarterfinal. HPU went 1-1 yesterday, falling to host Cal State Stanislaus 4-2 then coming back with a 12-3 win over UC San Diego.

Hawaii-Hilo (20-18) also went 1-1 yesterday and will meet Chaminade in today's semifinal of the bronze bracket. The Silverswords (7-30) dropped three games yesterday, falling to Humboldt State 8-7, to CSU Stanislaus 10-7 and to Sonoma State 8-0 in six innings.

UHH rode a six-run first inning to a 9-1, five-inning win over Central Washington but lost to Northwest Nazarene 2-1. The UHH-Chaminade winner will play UC San Diego for the title in the bronze bracket.
