Christians will celebrate Palm Sunday tomorrow, the beginning of Holy Week. Services throughout the week will memorialize the Gospel stories of events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter.

Churches in the Kalihi Palama area have canceled a decades-long Palm Sunday tradition, an ecumenical parade from Aala Park to Kaumakapili Church and joint service. Each church will celebrate on its own this year.

Here are some of the events planned by Oahu churches. Many special Easter events planned for next weekend will be listed on these pages next Saturday.

» A religious tradition from the Philippines will be observed on Good Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Hawaii Plantation Villages, 95-095 Waipahu St., Waipahu. A group of Filipino organizations will sponsor the “;pabasa,”; in which people take turns reading an account of Jesus' suffering and death in rhyming stanzas in different dialects. Leo Gozar, 230-0088, is coordinator.

» Word of Life Christian Center, 544 Queen St. will present a free theatrical performance, “;Captured by the Cross,”; at 7 p.m. Friday and next Saturday, and again at 6 p.m. Easter Sunday. Special children's activities and child care will be available. Parking is free.

» Kawaiaha'o Church will offer an 11 a.m. Good Friday Concert of music and narrative, featuring Gabriel Faure's “;Requiem Mass”; performed by the 80-voice concert choir.

» The Windward Coalition of Churches will join together for a noon Good Friday service at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 780 Keolu Drive, Kailua.

» Central Union Church, 1660 S. Beretania St. The long-standing Palm Sunday procession by Sunday school children accompanied by a donkey will precede the 9 a.m. service tomorrow. There will be a petting zoo for youngsters afterward. There will be a 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday services.

» Kaumakapili Church, 766 N. King St., will celebrate Palm Sunday with its own parade by Sunday school children on the grounds at 9:30 a.m., and will hold a 6 p.m. Good Friday service of light.

» St. Andrew's Cathedral will celebrate the Liturgy of the Palms at 9:45 a.m. tomorrow outdoors at Queen Emma Square. The Episcopal cathedral will sponsor Holy Week concerts at 5 p.m. tomorrow and 12:15 p.m. Wednesday. Holy Week services will include an 11:45 a.m. Tuesday Chrism Mass; Maundy Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and a 10 p.m. Compline; Good Friday commemoration of the Lord's Passion from noon to 3 p.m. with 5:30 p.m. Stations of the Cross.

» Catholic Diocese. Bishop Larry Silva will preside at the 10 a.m. Mass of the Lord's Passion tomorrow at Our Lady of Peace Cathedral. He will lead the 7:30 p.m. Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, washing the feet of several communicants to remember the Last Supper, when Christ washed the feet of his apostles. Silva will lead the 3 p.m. Good Friday liturgy at the co-cathedral. Each Catholic parish will hold Holy Week services.

» First Christian Church, 1516 Kewalo St., will celebrate Palm Sunday at 10:45 a.m. The Maundy Thursday service will be at 7 p.m.

» Windward United Church of Christ, 38 Kaneohe Bay Drive, will hold a Maundy Thursday service preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m. Cost is $4 for people over 12 years. Child care will be provided.

» Olive United Methodist Church, 108 California Ave., will have a 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday service with feet washing and Communion. The Good Friday service at 7 p.m. will feature performance of the “;Easter Cantata.”;

» Newman Center, East-West Road, University of Hawaii. The Mass of the Last Supper will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Good Friday liturgy will be at 1 p.m. and Taize Prayer around the cross at 7:30 p.m.

» St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, Kapolei. Good Friday worship will be at 7 p.m. at Island Pacific Academy, 909 Haumea St., Kapolei.
