Access to affordable art, and the grand opening of a new gallery that perpetuates the creative energy of a late and beloved local artist, highlight this month's First Friday downtown art walk.

Bethel Street Gallery (1140 Bethel St., 524-3552) is expecting so much foot traffic during its Affordable Art Show and Sale that it will stay open an hour later, until 10. Twenty-five local artists will contribute works priced under $1,000, with more than half of the items under $500.

“;We are trying to keep people collecting even in this slow economic period,”; reads a statement from the gallery.

Participating artists include Marc Turner, Scottie Flamm, Chuck Davis, Sandra Blazel, Chris Campbell, Harinani Orme, Jane Raissle, Jo Rowley, Mark Kadota, Noreen Naughton, Snowden Hodges, Alan Carrell, Nancy Vilhauer and Maile Yawata.

Meanwhile, nearby a special discount will be given to shoppers who take in the grand opening of the Peggy Chun Gallery (1161 Nuuanu Ave., 545-4810). Ten percent will be taken off anything purchased there Friday night—provided you're in costume. For inspiration, check out www.peggychun.com to see some of Chun's whimsical characters. Light pupus and refreshments will be served.

» The just-opened “;Jumping Flea”; mixed-media group show that celebrates art and music at the Chinatown Boardroom (1160 Nuuanu Ave., 585-7200). The exhibit runs through April 25. Participating artists were asked to use an ukulele kit as their canvas. The public can also purchase their own kits, with a portion of sales benefiting the educational, nonprofit Ukulele Foundation of Hawaii.

» The “;Live in the Lawn”; concert at the Hawaii State Art Museum (250 Hotel St., 586-0900), with the theme “;Pacific Oasis.”; Peter Apo and the Rainbow Nation Band, 808NDNZ and the Royal Hawaiian Band will be featured artists, with Partners in Time and Te Lumanaki o Tokelau I Amelika performing upstairs in the gallery's lanai area.

» An artist talk with Wendy Kawabata at The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center (999 Bishop St., 526-1322) that starts at 7:30 as she speaks about her exhibit on display through May 19, “;Pull, Poke, Fold.”;
