Shoji, Lawson try for U.S. junior team

Libero Erik Shoji and hitter Brad Lawson, both freshmen competing for Stanford, are among the 19 players who have been named to the U.S. men's junior national volleyball training team.

Shoji (Punahou '08) and Lawson ('Iolani ('08) were on the U.S. team that won the bronze at last year's NORCECA continental junior championship. The training team will be trimmed to 15 and compete in the FIVB World Championship, July 31 to Aug. 9 in Pune, India.

Tri Bourne (AOP '07), currently playing at USC, was named as an alternate. He was on the junior national team last summer.

Entries available for Women's Publinx

Entries for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship are being accepted for the June 22-27 event in Devens, Mass.

The cost is $50 for the event, which is open to amateur females. Applications are available at http://www.usga.org or by calling 908-234-2300. The deadline is May 9.

A Publinx qualifier will be held May 24 at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai. On May 23, the course hosts the U.S. Women's Open qualifier.

Wahine to beach volleyball tourney

The Hawaii women's volleyball team, which finished ranked No. 7 last fall, will participate in the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in Riverside, Calif., on April 18.

Other ranked teams competing are Nebraska, Texas and USC. Each school fields four teams of two players.

The event is run in conjunction with the AVP Crocs Tour Riverside Open. Beach volleyball is expected to become an NCAA women's sport beginning with the 2010-11 school year.

Vulcans drop baseball doubleheader

A day after taking a PacWest baseball doubleheader from Grand Canyon, Hawaii-Hilo had the tables turned when the Antelopes rebounded for 12-3 and 10-9 victories yesterday in Phoenix.

In the second game, the Vulcans (15-15, 6-10) broke an 8-8 tie in the top of the sixth on Shane Kessel's RBI triple to right. The Antelopes (13-22, 7-9) answered with one out in the bottom of the seventh on Tyler Blair's two-run single to left-center.

In the opener, Grand Canyon jumped on UHH for seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back. The Vulcans pulled to within 7-3 in the fifth, but the Antelopes put the game out of reach with five runs in the sixth.
