Easter lilies for Easter Seals

Bring a fresh, Maui-grown lily plant into your home for the Easter holiday and you'll be supporting Easter Seals Hawaii at the same time.

Maui's Howard's Nurseries is partnering with Foodland stores statewide for the 11th year, offering potted lilies for $10.99, with a portion of the proceeds going to support Easter Seals' programs for Hawaii residents with disabilities.

Young Bros. and Armstrong Produce donated transportation services to make the “;Lilies for Abilities”; campaign possible.

Easter is April 12, and the lily, besides being the symbol of Easter Seals, expresses the joy, hope and life of the season.

Fitness camp aimed at youths

Wellspring Hawaii, a summer camp, helps young people lose weight and adopt healthy lifestyles. Four-, six- and eight-week sessions are offered for boys and girls ages 11 to 24 beginning June 21. Campers learn to achieve long-term weight loss at a secluded retreat located on the slopes of Mauna Kea on the Big Island.

Participants typically lose about 4 pounds per week as they learn to prepare low-fat meals and achieve 10,000 steps through hiking, walking, snorkeling, surfing, sea kayaking, beach volleyball and aerobics. The camp combines diet and activity management with cognitive- behavioral therapy to help campers develop the skills needed to continue to lose or maintain weight once they return home. Groups learn how to build assets

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement has launched an Asset Building Initiative to provide free training and technical assistance to community-based organizations in the Pacific.

Services to help develop existing programs are offered in areas of financial education, entrepreneurship development, community development and individual development.

Musical theater classes available

Registration starts Monday for Diamond Head Theatre's Musical Theatre Experience summer program for children and teens.

The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber will be the focus of the program, which gives students a theater experience, from mock auditions to staging a full performance.

Classes are weekdays from June 15 to July 24. Ages 7 to 12 attend from 8 a.m. to noon; ages 12 to 16 years, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

A special intensive workshop, MTE II, is offered for youth ages 7 to 16 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 3 to 14. Experience is required.

Book sale has deep discounts

Books in categories of military, history and biography are half off tomorrow at the Friends of the Library of Hawaii book sale.

The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bill's Bookmobile, 690 Pohukaina St.

More deals: Those in the military can claim an additional 25 percent off books on military history, and romance novels are $5 per bag.

Keiki build architect skills

Island architects will lead keiki in a number of design projects, including building a large-scale replica of the U.S. Capitol out of cardboard boxes, during a free family event at the Honolulu Academy of Arts April 12.

The National Geographic documentary “;The White House: Inside America's Most Famous Home”; also will be shown. The academy will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for this event, themed “;Unity.”;

The event is sponsored by Bank of Hawaii and is part of the “;Free Bank of Hawaii Family Sundays”; series featuring entertainment and themed family activities on one Sunday of each month.

Hawaii's Woodshow ends Sunday evening

Last chance to catch the 17th annual Hawaii's Woodshow on display at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Center at Linekona, through Sunday.

The show features works by woodworking artists statewide.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The free show is sponsored by the Hawaii Forest Industry Association to promote use of Hawaii-grown wood. Awards went to:

Joel Bright: Best of Show award for “;Koa Fantasia.”;
R.W. Butts: Award of Excellence for “;Sofa/Hall Table.”;
Frank McClure, Joel Bright and Don Albrecht: The Skolmen Award for best use of lesser-known, Hawaii-grown woods.
Rachel K. Dunn: The 13-year-old won Student Award and Kent Award for her pens.

Ohana homes focus of building seminar

Graham Builders presents the seminar “;Planning for Your Accessible Multigeneration Home,”; at the Honolulu Country Club at 1690 Ala Puumala St. in the Salt Lake area.

Pacific Home hosts Earth Day event

Pacific Home is partnering with Pacific Edge magazine and Social Wahines to host an eco-friendly shopping event in honor of Earth Day.

“;The Business of Networking”; will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. April 28 at the Pacific Home showroom at 420 Ward Ave.

Cost is $20, $10 for members. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii.
