'Iolani hands Pac-Five its first loss

'Iolani pitcher Brittany Guro was on such cruise control she had no idea she took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Pac-Five yesterday.

“;Everything was going pretty good,”; she said simply after the game.

'Iolani's hitters, who had struggled through the first three games of the regular season, knocked around Pac-Five ace Sheridan Mahelona early and often. The Raiders broke open the scoring with three runs off three sharp singles in the second inning and never looked back.

“;I told them to have fun, just relax,”; said 'Iolani coach Lance Watanabe. “;I guess they just reacted and responded. Our bats finally woke up.”;

It was 'Iolani's day, as the Raiders cruised to a 6-0 victory in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu showdown against second-ranked Pac-Five at windy Ala Wai Community Park. The Raiders, third in the Star-Bulletin statewide poll, improved to 4-0. Pac-Five (4-1) dropped its first game of the season.

In the matchup of unbeatens, Guro dominated with her overpowering pitches—fastball, riser and change-up—to keep Pac-Five off the bases. She hit a batter in the first inning (who was later caught stealing), and that was the only baserunner until the sixth inning. She recorded five strikeouts in the first five innings.

“;She did outstanding,”; Watanabe said. “;Her riser was working. She kept them off balance. She mixed in some change-ups. And she was hitting her spots.”;

Breeann Choy ended Guro's no-hitter with a solid single through the left side of the infield with one out in the sixth inning. After Choy advanced to second on a wild pitch, Guro ended the inning in typical fashion: by striking out Chante Tesoro.

Guro finished with six strikeouts.

Even when Pac-Five jumped on a Guro offering, the Raiders' defense was superb. Pac-Five catcher Joedee Lovell lined a pitch to right field, but she hit it so hard that 'Iolani right fielder Lahela Usui threw her out at first base. Wolfpack infielder Aja Keyes ripped a line drive up the middle, but in self-defense, Guro snagged the ball to end the fifth inning. And in the seventh, with a runner on second and one out, third baseman Kim Souza made a superb, off-balance play on a bunt by picking up the ball and throwing to first in one motion on the run.

“;The defense helped me out a lot,”; Guro said.

The defense may have secured the win, but the offense gave 'Iolani a comfortable cushion early. In the second inning, the Raiders sent eight batters to the plate and pounded out three hits for three runs. They followed it up with two more runs, thanks to Marisa Terayama's two-run triple, in the third inning. Kryn Masutani tripled and scored in the fifth.

It was rare offense against Mahelona, Pac-Five's ace who won last year's Division II state championship game and had worked all four of her team's wins this season.

“;We knew she was going to hit her spots good, so we worked on outside and inside (the plate),”; Masutani said. “;She did hit her spots good. I guess we just were able to hit (the ball).”;

'Iolani finished with 10 hits, including two triples, against Mahelona. Masutani went 2-for-2 and scored three runs. Terayama drove in three runs on two hits.

No 'Iolani batter struck out, and every 'Iolani starter reached base at least once.
