Nakamoto chooses Northern Colorado

Hawaii Baptist senior Matt Nakamoto has accepted a scholarship to continue his cross country and track and field career at Northern Colorado.

“;I really like the campus, the team and the coach,”; said Nakamoto, who was second in the state in cross country last fall and fourth in the state in the 3,000 meters last spring.

He chose Northern Colorado over San Francisco, Azusa Pacific, Pepperdine and Creighton.

No. 11 HPU splits with Stanislaus

Hawaii Pacific split a softball doubleheader with Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif., yesterday.

The Sea Warriors, ranked No. 11 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 poll, blanked the Warriors 7-0 in the second game after dropping a 3-1 decision earlier in the day.

Warriors pitcher Jessica Gaumnitz outdueled Courtney Kessel for the win in the first game. Gaumnitz allowed one run on two hits with seven strikeouts. Kessel, who fell to 12-4, gave up three runs on five hits.

Sherise Musquiz picked up the Sea Warriors' win in the finale, pitching a complete-game four-hit shutout.

Maile Kim led Hawaii Pacific at the plate, going 3-for-4, including a solo home run in the seventh inning.

The Sea Warriors improved to 28-6, while the Warriors fell to 19-11.

Hawaii Pacific takes on Humboldt State, the West Region's top-ranked team, in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions on Saturday.

» Brigham Young-Hawaii bounced back from a 4-3 loss in the first game of a doubleheader with Notre Dame de Namur to claim the second game 7-2. The Seasiders scored all seven runs in the final two innings.

Ivy Sessions hit a homer in the sixth inning of the first game to put BYUH up 3-2, but the Argonauts responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth and an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Sessions led the way for the Seasiders, finishing the doubleheader with six RBIs in addition to the homer.

Julianne Tialavea picked up the pitching win in the second game.

Vulcans sweep Antelopes in baseball

Hawaii-Hilo swept a baseball doubleheader from Grand Canyon yesterday at Phoenix.

The Vulcans broke open a 3-3 game in the top of the ninth inning, scoring six runs on two hits and three Antelopes errors to take the first game, 9-4.

Hawaii-Hilo pitcher Kurtis Sherer earned the win, yielding one earned run on two hits over the final two innings.

The Vulcans completed the sweep with an 8-6 win in the second game, rallying for five runs in the top of the sixth.

Senior shortstop Thomas Brown III went 2-for-3 and hit a solo homer to left-center field in the seventh inning to lead the Vulcans.

Clayton Uyechi gave up six runs on five hits, but still earned the win.

Sea Warriors top Pacers in tennis

The Division II No. 18 Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team swept South Carolina-Aiken 9-0 at Aiken, S.C.

Hawaii Pacific's Zora Vickova dominated Stephanie Humphrey 6-1, 6-0, and the Sea Warriors took all six singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles, Vickova teamed with Ingred Cseh to top the Pacers doubles team of Mathilde Grenet and Brittany Telford, 8-0.

The Lady Sea Warriors improved to 10-6 and take on Augusta State today.

» The sixth-ranked Sea Warriors fell to No. 10 South Carolina-Aiken in the men's match, 5-4, at Aiken, S.C.

Hawaii Pacific's Daniel Luedi topped Christopher Kaetz 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in singles, and the Sea Warriors' Hendrik Bode and Sebastian Bader defeated Bruno Seves and Filipe Garcia at No. 2 doubles, 8-5.

HPU fell to 10-4 and also play Augusta State today.
