Public art comes out for First Friday

More than 175 works of art from the State's “;Art in Public Places”; program will be on display tomorrow at the State Capitol as part of April's First Friday celebration.

“;Art at the Capitol,”; 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the State Senate offices on the second and fourth floors, marks the first time the Capitol will participate in a First Friday event. Admission is free.

Visitors may meet with some of the artists whose works are on display, including painter and sculptor Satoru Abe. The Hawai'i Youth Symphony will perform.

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts' “;Art in Public Places”; program places works in public areas of state buildings to expand resident's access to and appreciation of fine art. Established in 1967, it was the first program of its kind in the nation.

Shoes to spare?

Meadow Gold Dairies, Kalihi Education Coalition and Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange (K-VIBE) will be holding a bike and shoe donation drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at McCully Bicycle and Sporting Goods.

More than 50 keiki are in need of equipment to allow them to participate in the third annual Meadow Gold Kids Triathlon on May 2 so businesses and the public are being asked to donate new and gently used bicycles and running shoes for the aspiring keiki triathletes.

Bicycles should be new or gently used and in serviceable condition, and donated shoes, in sizes appropriate for keiki 7 to 14 years old, should be suitable for running.

Monetary donations can also be made, with contributions used for the purchase of bikes, shoes and safety helmets.

Children can still register to participate in the triathlon. Log on to www.lanimoo.com for registration information. Monday is the registration deadline.

Special hair cuts

Pigtails and Crewcuts is extending its store hours for families of children with special needs such as autism or children who are wheelchair bound. The new hours will be by appointment only, from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays.

The addition is at the request of parents of children with special needs “;who don't feel comfortable with the busy crowd on the weekends,”; said owner Brian Yonehara. “;Some children do better in a quiet more individualized setting.”;

The child-oriented salon features a playroom and a party room with toys, blocks, balls and movies. The waiting area also features a large wooden train and above every haircutting station is a TV that plays family-friendly movies. Pint-sized barber chairs are shaped like an airplane, taxi, fire engine and police car.

Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays, walk-in only. Pigtails and Crewcuts is at 930 Valkenburgh St. Call 422-4300.
