Wichmann earns WAC track honor

Hawaii senior Annett Wichmann was named the Western Athletic Conference's track and field athlete of the week following her performance at last week's Stanford Invitational.

Wichmann earned an NCAA regional qualifying mark in the javelin with a throw of 163 feet, 11 inches, which is fourth-best nationally this season. The mark was a personal best and a UH record. It broke her previous record by more than six feet.

No. 11 HPU sweeps in softball

Courtney Kessell's two-run homer highlighted a 10-run second inning and No. 11 Hawaii Pacific routed Notre Dame de Namur 20-4 in the first game of a PacWest softball doubleheader in Belmont, Calif., yesterday.

Kessell also earned the win in the mercy-rule-shortened, five-inning game. She pitched three innings and gave up two hits.

Maile Kim homered twice and drove in six runs to lead the HPU offense.

In the second game, Sherise Musquiz scattered seven hits and shut out the Argos 6-0. Krystal Plunkett helped the Sea Warriors (27-5, 15-3) with a three-run home run in the fifth.

The Argos fell to 8-23 and 0-16.

» HPU sophomore utility Kozy Toriano earned PacWest player of the week honors after hitting .800 in four games last week. She drove in three runs and went 8-for-10 as the Sea Warriors went 2-2 on the road.

» At Phoenix, Tracy Lubken hit three home runs, including two in the sixth inning, as Grand Canyon competed a sweep of Brigham Young-Hawaii in their PacWest softball doubleheader with a 17-7 six-inning victory yesterday.

In the opener, Randi Johns had a grand slam and drove in seven runs in the Antelopes' 9-2 win.

The Seasiders (12-24, 5-14) took a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning of the second game, helped by RBI singles from Kim Artiaga and Morgan Necaise.

The Antelopes (29-17, 12-7) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, then scored 10 runs in the sixth, with Johns' three-run homer halting the game due to the eight-run rule.
