Wily is player of year for second time

Brigham Young-Hawaii senior forward Latoya Wily earned the PacWest player of the year honor for the second time yesterday.

Wily was also player of the year two years ago before she took one year off.

Wily led the conference in scoring (25.6 points per game), rebounding (13.9 per game) and field-goal percentage (59.5).

Hawaii-Hilo senior forward Sheila Azevedo made the All-PacWest first team for the third straight year.

Hawaii Pacific junior guard Tiffany Wilson also made the first team and was picked as the newcomer of the year. HPU teammates Mana Hopkins, a freshman forward, and Paris Gravely, a freshman guard, were chosen to the conference second team.

In addition, Hopkins was named as the freshman of the year.

Among the honorable mention selections were BYUH's Richelle Fenenbock and Mahina Gago, UHH's Amanda Adams, Jessica Hanato and Hina Kimitete, HPU's Taylor Craig, and Chaminade's Jasmine Dulan and Samantha Saito.

Valdosta State tips Hawaii Pacific

Division II No. 2 Valdosta State edged No. 6 Hawaii Pacific 5-4 in a men's tennis match yesterday at Valdosta, Ga.

With the match tied 4-4, the Blazers' Otto Lenhart beat the Sea Warriors' Anton Samuilau 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 to seal the team victory.

» In women's tennis at Valdosta, Ga., Division II No. 3 Valdosta State got past No. 18 Hawaii Pacific 6-3.

Zora Vickova, Aleksandra Stankovic and Ingrid Cseh all won singles matches for the Sea Warriors.

Vulcans edge Red Storm in baseball

Hawaii-Hilo had 12 hits against eight Dixie State pitchers in a 12-11 baseball victory yesterday at St. George, Utah.

Keoni Manago went 4-for-5 with six RBIs to lead the Vulcans (13-13, 4-8 PacWest). Peter Rodgers chipped in with three RBIs.

Manago's grand slam in the seventh sparked a six-run rally to give UHH a 10-8 lead. The Red Storm dropped to 18-10 and 8-4.

San Francisco State sweeps UHH

San Francisco State took two softball games from Hawaii-Hilo—1-0 and 5-4—yesterday at San Francisco.

The Gators won the first game on Karolyn Gubbine's walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth.

Vanessa Truan pitched a two-hitter for the victory.

In the second game, San Francisco State (17-14) wiped out a 4-2 deficit with Kelsey Wood's three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Lauren Holmes and Tessa Truong had two hits each and Nicole Alconcel had two RBIs for the Vulcans (16-17).
