Mid-Pacific takes advantage of Saint Louis
POSTED: Sunday, March 29, 2009
Different opponent, same problem.
Saint Louis continued its yearlong struggle of stranding runners on base, and Mid-Pacific took advantage for a 6-5 victory in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game yesterday afternoon at Ala Wai Community Park.
Despite outhitting the Owls 12-8, Saint Louis stranded 12 runners on base, including nine in scoring position. The problem is a lingering one for the Crusaders, as over the past eight days the club has lost three times, and in those games, Saint Louis left 32 runners hanging on the base paths—an average of nearly 11 a game.
“;It's a problem for us. We're killing ourselves,”; said Saint Louis coach Duane Fraticelli. “;We've just got to hit in clutch situations. We get guys on, but we can't drive them in, and that's our biggest problem this year.”;
Trailing 6-3 entering its home half of the seventh inning, the Crusaders mounted a comeback as Vonn Fe'ao drew a leadoff walk, and came home on Derek Nakasato's triple. After Josh Tapua fouled out, Kaeo Aliviado brought home Nakasato on a fielder's choice groundout to second base.
But ensuing batter Kini Enos could not extend the rally as the hot-hitting junior flied out to center field, and Saint Louis found itself on the wrong end of a 6-5 defeat eight days after falling to five-time defending state champion Punahou by the identical score.
“;We've just got to get ready for the next team—it's the toughest league, the ILH,”; said Fraticelli, less than a day after falling to Kamehameha 12-4. “;We can't start off flat. Two games we've lost by one run, we've just got to clutch up.
“;We know what everyone's doing to us (strategically), but I can't give that secret out. They're just going to have to be disciplined and understand what we're telling them about different approaches.”;
Mid-Pacific (5-1) accounted for all its scoring with three-run spurts in the first and fourth innings. Seven different players accounted for the team's eight base knocks, and although Tyler Yoshizawa's two-run single in the fourth inning with two out marked the club's final base hit of the game, the lack of further offensive production did not hurt the Owls in the end.
“;We were lucky today. It's more a mental thing for them, nothing we did,”; said Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru. “;And that's how it is until somebody breaks through, so I hope they don't do it against us. Somebody's going to get that base hit, and when that happens, look out.”;
The Owls received a strong effort from their bullpen, as starter Gavin Kinoshita was removed after just 1 1/3 innings due to an inability to control his pitches. The hurler allowed two hits, walked a batter and hit three more foes while retiring just four.
Dylan Tawata came on to hold Saint Louis (3-3) to a run through 2 2/3 innings in which he scattered four hits and became the pitcher of record worthy of the victory. Matt McDaniel moved over from first base to pitch the final three innings, and earned the save despite surrendering three runs on six hits.
Muramaru was also impressed with both McDaniel and Tawata—the latter of which had barely worked on hitting this season—as both hurlers notched RBI singles, which ultimately gave the Owls the upper hand.
“;He never hit before all year. I don't even think he hit in the cage,”; said Muramaru of Tawata's base hit. “;But the way we had (the rotation) set up, we knew he'd have to hit. That was a real added bonus.”;
