'Artists of Hawaii 2009' participants are named
The Honolulu Academy of Arts has announced the 64 participants of its 58th annual “;Artists of Hawaii 2009”; juried exhibition, slated to run May 14 to Aug. 14.
Award winners this year:

'ArtMania' at UH-Manoa offers many activities
The University of Hawaii is holding its second annual “;ArtMania”; community event, a showcase of art demonstrations, interactive activities, exhibitions, an art sale, live performances and food.
The free event runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Sunday at the UH-Manoa art building.
Visitors can screen print their own T-shirts (for a nominal fee) and make their own glass paperweight (participants must wear long pants, covered shoes and sunglasses).
Demo highlights include ceramic wheel-throwing and raku firings, portrait painting, bookbinding, loom weaving, printmaking, bronze casting, woodcarving and glass blowing.
The UH Art Gallery will hold tours of its current exhibit, “;The 10th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition,”; which features 141 small-scale works by international artists.

Silverado wines at Colony dinner
The Colony Restaurant in Waikiki showcases the wines of Silverado Vineyards at a five-course dinner, 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Silverado is a family-owned estate in Napa Valley, Calif.
Chef Jeff Wind's menu: Sushi Bar Tapas with Nigiri of Beef Tataki, Alaskan Snow Crab Cake and Oyster Shooter (with 2007 Vineberg Chardonnay); Smoked Duck Salad (2006 Merlot); Filet Mignon & Tiger Prawns (2005 Solo Cabernet Sauvignon); and Baked Custard & Fruit Marbles (2003 Royal Tokaji “;Red Label”; Furmint).

Bring your wine, to Kakaako dinner
Bring your own wine or beer to Kakaako Kitchen at Ward Centre for “;Picnic on the Lanai,”; 6:30 p.m. next Sunday.
You'll need to supply your own corkscrew, but the restaurant will provide the glasses, with no corkage fee.
The menu, served family style: Spring Salad with Nalo Greens, Pears and Walnuts; Homestyle Braised Shoulder Beef; Sauteed Opakapaka Dore; Orzo with Confetti of Fresh Vegetables; Sauteed Green Beans; and Fresh Fruit Tarts.

Don Ho's offers gift with special dinner
Don Ho's Island Grill celebrates its anniversary with a gift for diners: a copy of “;Don Ho My Life, My Music.”;
The late singer's autobiography is free to those who purchase two anniversary dinner specials.
The menu: Soup of the Day or Caesar Salad; entree choice of Crab-Stuffed Shrimp, Pulehu Tenderloin Beef Skewers or Furikake Island Mahi; and dessert of Homemade Haupia Cake or Lappert's Luau Delight.

Chef Hiroshi Fukui's next “;Contemporary Kaiseki”; is set for April 9 at Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas in Restaurant Row.
The nine-course menu: Beef & Foie Gras “;Shabu Shabu”; Style; Kahuku Corn Crab “;Chowder”;; Torched Scallop on the Half Shell; Steamed Moi “;Cake”;; Sous Vide of Kona Cold Lobster Tail; Pan-Roasted Big Island Black Tiger Shrimp; Filet Mignon “;Sandwich”;; Ginger Pork Chazuke; and Cherie's Neopolitan Parfait.

Formaggio Kailua books wine class
Formaggio Grill in Kailua hosts master sommelier Roberto Viernes' next WinED class at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Viernes will present six wines from around the world for tasting while explaining their qualities and how best to appreciate them.
