The basics of volleyball are simple: serve and pass.

Hawaii failed at both last night, falling to UC Irvine and likely falling out of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs for a second straight year.

The Warriors committed 13 service errors—six that prevented them from winning Set 3—when being swept by the top-ranked Anteaters 30-19, 30-24, 32-30 at the Bren Center.

The loss dropped Hawaii (6-15, 3-13) into 11th place in the 12-team league. The top eight advance to next month's MPSF tournament.

Warriors coach Mike Wilton didn't know if his team was mathematically eliminated with six matches remaining but “;figured that it would take 10 wins to get in,”; he said. “;Even if we win the rest, we'll only have nine.”;

All Hawaii cares about right now is “;one.”; The Warriors are 0-8 on the road this season.

Once again, Hawaii struggled with consistency, particularly at the ends of sets. Unforced errors proved the Warriors downfall in Set 3 when they appeared poised to win it, with two hitting and two serving errors accounting for four of the Anteaters' last seven points.

Hawaii led 25-22 but couldn't side-out when it counted. As happened in Thursday's loss, UCI went on a momentum-changing run, this one of 4-0, to take a 26-25 lead.

An Anteaters hitting error tied it at 26 and it would be tied four more times, the last at 30 on UCI's 21st service error of the match. Setter Ryan Ammerman's only kills gave the Anteaters their third match point and Brennon Dyer hit long to end it after 92 minutes.

Dyer finished with a team-high 11 kills after coming off the bench in Set 2. Sean Carney added 10. Two freshmen led UCI, Carson Clark with 20 kills and Austin D'Amore 10.

The Anteaters finished with a 14-7 edge in blocks.

“;We put together a pretty good Set 3, but we ended up beating ourselves,”; Wilton said. “;We had a chance to win, that's for sure, but once again, it came down to serve and pass.”;

Hawaii next is at UCLA for matches Thursday and Friday.
