'Bows sweep past C. Carolina

Vinnie Catricala made it perfectly clear why Coastal Carolina wanted no part of him in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader.

Catricala ripped a key two-run double as Hawaii stretched its lead with three runs in the fifth inning to cap a doubleheader sweep of the Chanticleers with a 7-1 victory in seven innings last night in front of a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 2,088.
The Rainbows (15-9) bounced back from Thursday's no-hitter by Coastal Carolina's Cody Wheeler by winning both games yesterday to hand the Chanticleers (19-6), ranked 15th in this week's USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 coaches poll, their fifth loss in seven games.
“;This day was a real testament to the heart and toughness of this group of guys,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;(Coastal Carolina is) going to get national headlines because of Wheeler's performance, but we needed to come out and make our own headlines showing how we can bounce back and play well.”;
Hawaii won the first game after Catricala was intentionally walked in the bottom of the ninth inning with runners on first and third and one out. It loaded the bases for Kevin Macdonald, who stepped into reliever Tommy Winegardner's first offering and took the pitch off his arm to give the 'Bows a 5-4 victory.
Hawaii trailed 4-3 going into the ninth, but rallied for two runs off the Chanticleers reliever.
The 'Bows only needed one hit, as Winegardner (0-1) walked Christian Johnson and Greg Garcia with one out. Matt Roquemore then ripped an RBI single to right before the Chanticleers decided to intentionally walk Catricala. Macdonald then took the first offering he saw right off his arm to end the game.
“;We were able to get some breaks, a hit batter and (Roquemore) got the big hit,”; Trapasso said. “;It was a big pick-me-up for us and then we came out of the gates strong.”;
Roquemore added an RBI single with the bases loaded in the sixth inning of the second game and finished 3-for-9 with two RBIs while hitting second in the lineup for the first time this year. Kolten Wong was dropped to the fifth spot and went 4-for-7 with two runs scored.
“;I was just doing anything I can to help our team out,”; Roquemore said. “;It's huge for us with our backs against the wall to come out and play like that and we need to do that all the time.”;
Matt Sisto (3-1) picked up the win in the nightcap, scattering eight hits over five innings. He ran into trouble by giving up a single and a double to start the sixth, but Lenny Linsky filled in and held the Chanticleers to one run in the inning by striking out two of the three batters he faced.
Linsky allowed a leadoff single in the seventh, but erased him on the 'Bows' third double play of the day. Taylor Motter then flied out to center to end the game.
“;Sisto really wasn't very good tonight,”; Trapasso said. “;He was behind hitters all night and up in the zone all night, but somehow was able to hit balls to our guys in key situations, and then Lenny came in and was outstanding.”;
Sam Spangler (4-0) earned the win in relief in Game 1, allowing no runs on two hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Jared Alexander started for the Rainbows and allowed three runs on eight hits in four innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Jesse Moore allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings in relief.
“;Jesse settled the game for us,”; Trapasso said. “;Jared wasn't good. He struggled with his command and hit 75 (pitches) quick, so we took him out.”;
Hawaii kept the momentum going in the second game, manufacturing runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Wong started it with a one-out single and quickly stole second. After Hernandez grounded out, which moved Wong to third, Ryan Morford reached on a ground ball up the middle that the shortstop dropped trying to throw Morford out at first. Morford was then off to the races, stealing second, and came in on the two-out single by Johnson, who fouled off two tough two-strike pitches before poking one through for a hit.
“;That's sort of like what (Coastal Carolina) likes to do,”; Catricala said. “;We kind of beat them with their own medicine.”;
Hawaii moved to six games over .500 for the season and can win the series today with a victory in the finale at 12:05 p.m.
