Boy in state custody attacks man

Police arrested a 12-year-old boy who allegedly attacked a 46-year-old man while in state custody.

Police booked the boy on suspicion of second-degree assault after he allegedly assaulted the facility worker at about 11:10 a.m. Thursday. The worker declined medical attention.

Sex assault suspect goes to police

A 27-year-old Ewa man turned himself in to police Thursday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 23-year-old woman at a party in Waianae.

The woman told police that on March 14 she was at a social gathering where people were sleeping over at a beach house and woke up in the morning to find the man assaulting her, police said. Police booked the man on suspicion of second- and fourth-degree sexual assault. He was released pending investigation.

Maui police look into walker's death

Maui traffic investigators were continuing to probe the death of a man who was hit in a crosswalk by a bus in Lahaina, police Lt. Robert Hill said yesterday.

Leo Nekus, 81, of Lahaina died Monday at Maui Memorial Medical Center after suffering injuries in the crash on March 13. A 79-year-old woman who also was struck was in stable condition at the hospital.

The Roberts Hawaii bus, chartered to carry hotel workers, was turning left from Kai Ala Drive onto Honoapiilani Highway, heading in the Napili direction, when it struck the two, who were crossing in the mauka direction at 7:49 a.m., police said. Police said the bus was operated by a 66-year-old man and carrying 13 passengers.

Nekus' death was the fourth traffic fatality in Maui County, compared with five for the same period last year.

Child sex-assault suspect released

Police released yesterday a 51-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl in Ewa Beach.

The man, who surrendered to police, was arrested on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault, often fondling.

The alleged sexual assault occurred at 10:30 a.m. March 4.
