Meet 'Lei in a Bottle' authors at vintage show

How sweet it is. Gwen and Evan Olins have compiled their collection of Hawaii perfume bottles of the 1930s to 1960 for others to enjoy in a book, “;Lei in a Bottle: Collection Hawaiian Perfume Bottles.”;

Published by Hula Moon Press, it features 240 images of the couple's collection, the largest known collection of carved-wood perfume bottles.

Meet the authors Sunday during the Vintage Collectibles & Hawaiiana Show at the Blaisdell Center Hawaii Suites. The Olins will be at the Hula Heaven table, No. 64, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Their book sells for $24.95.

The Vintage Collectibles Show is a one-day event, featuring items 20 years and older, including advertising, aloha shirts, antiques, art beads, books and more.

Anthurium society presents annual show

The Hawaiian Anthurium Society presents its 29th annual plant show and sale near the Diamond Head food court at Ward Warehouse on Easter weekend.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 10 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 11.

The free event includes a horticulture workshop at 10 a.m. daily; sales of floral arrangements, ti leaf, haku leis, corsages and plants; and Easter activities for the keiki from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 11.

Education exhibits at Garden Club show

The Garden Club of Honolulu is holding its triennial flower and horticulture show, “;Na Pua Ali'i: Reflections on Hawai'i's Royal Legacy,”; April 17-19 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

The show features educational exhibits on the garden plants of royal Hawaiian properties, and entries in horticulture, flower arrangement, photography and botanical jewelry (plant material transformed into precious gems). Free. Call 532-8700.

Betty Crocker nominees sought

Scenic Hawaii is seeking nominations for its Betty Crocker Landscape Awards, the program's sixth annual event, which recognizes Hawaii's best garden and landscape projects and the individuals responsible for the creations.

The four categories are private homeowners, professional landscapers, volunteers for public or private projects and xeriscape gardens.

Submission deadline is May 22. Include a description, photographs and the name, address and phone number of the project, the primary person responsible for the work and nominator.

Sneak preview of kane hula at Hawaii Theatre

After 33 years of teaching women of all ages, kumu hula Mapuana de Silva unveils her new class of 15 kane dancers tomorrow at the Hawaii Theatre.

The premiere performance of “;Mapu's Men”; will be part of the annual “;Holomua ka No'eau”; concert, which will preview the performances that de Sliva's Halau Mohala 'Ilima will take to the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo next month.

The 6 p.m. show will include several of de Silva's classes, including the new men's group.

Musicians Manu Boyd, Glenn Smith, Keala Chock, Chad Takatsugi and Kale Hannas will play for the dancers.

De Silva holds the record for the most consecutive years of Merrie Monarch appearances; this year will be her 31st.
