Neighbor with hose helps control fire

Quick help from a next-door neighbor kept fire from spreading in a Nuuanu house Monday.

The neighbor heard calls for help from a woman resident at 44 Mamalahoa Place at about 4:50 p.m., according to Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The neighbor entered the home with a garden hose and sprayed water on the fire in a second-floor linen closet until firefighters arrived. Firefighters reported it under control at 4:59 p.m.

The cause was electrical and damage was estimated at $6,000, Kealoha said.

2 men arrested in kidnap attempt

Police arrested two men Sunday night who allegedly tried to kidnap a woman who was walking in Makiki.

Police said the woman was walking about 8:17 p.m. when one of the men grabbed her and forced her into a vehicle with another man. The woman pushed her assailant and fled on foot, police said.

A witness called police and officers found the suspects in the 1200 block of Piikoi Street. The suspects, ages 35 and 31, both with no local address, were arrested for investigation of kidnapping and second-degree theft. The victim's cell phone was stolen during the incident, police said.

Man accused of threat in Kahuku

Police arrested a 38-year-old Kaaawa man Monday for allegedly threatening another man in Kahuku last month.

Police said the victim told them that the suspect swung a piece of wood with a metal end at him at about 11:30 a.m. Feb. 21 and told him he didn't belong in the area.

The suspect turned himself in to police yesterday and was arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening. He was released later pending investigation.

Knife used as car taken from dealer

Police arrested a 32-year-old man who allegedly stole a car at knifepoint from an auto dealer during a test drive.

Police said the suspect was test driving a car from a Kaneohe dealership about 1:45 p.m. Monday when he pulled a knife on the 35-year-old dealership employee who was in the car with him.

The suspect then took off with the car, police said.

Officers found the suspect, and the car, along Kalanianaole Highway in Kailua about 5:39 p.m., police said. The suspect was arrested for investigation of first-degree robbery and auto theft.

1,400 pot plants taken; pair arrested

Kauai police charged two men after seizing more than 1,000 marijuana plants in Kilauea, according to a county news release.

The suspects, Miles Martinez, 53, and Rickie Trinque, 48, both of Kilauea, were charged Thursday with first-degree commercial promotion of marijuana and drug paraphernalia violations, according to the release.

Both were released Saturday pending investigation.

Police seized 1,400 marijuana plants ranging in height from 1 to 2 feet tall that were found in a field, the release said. The suspects were arrested after they were seen tending to the plants, the release said.

Man in crash dies of heart attack

A 67-year-old Big Island man died of a heart attack Monday after the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a rock wall fronting the old Kona Ranch House in Kailua-Kona, according to Big Island police.

The victim was identified as Melvin Lumwon of Kailua-Kona, police said.

An autopsy conducted yesterday determined that Lumwon died from a heart attack and not from injuries sustained in a traffic crash.

Lumwon was driving a 2005 Nissan Frontier pickup south on Kuakini Highway about 8:30 p.m. when his truck crossed the center line and hit the wall, police said.

He was wearing a seat belt. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he died, police said.

Victim in fatal was from Alaska

A 67-year-old Alaska man who died in a two-vehicle crash on the Big Island on Friday has been identified as Terry Lee Bergman of Juneau.

Police said Bergman was driving a 2008 four-door Mercury sedan north on Akoni Pule Highway in North Kohala about 2:11 p.m. when he ran off the right side of the road, hit a guardrail, bounced back onto the road, crossed the centerline and collided with a 2006 Chevrolet bus.

Bergman died at Kona Community Hospital. His 74-year-old wife, who was a passenger in the car, was taken in critical condition to North Hawaii Community Hospital.

An autopsy conducted Monday was inconclusive as to the cause of death.

The pathologist noted that the injuries from the crash were not the cause of Bergman's death. The pathologist will make a final determination when toxicology tests are completed.

A 60-year-old Kailua-Kona man who was driving the bus was in serious condition, also at North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Police were investigating whether the driver from Alaska suffered a medical condition before the crash.

Police said all the victims were wearing seat belts.
