A 55-year-old female pedestrian died yesterday after she was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross an exit from the H-1 freeway to Nimitz Highway.

The woman's identification has yet to be released.

About 8 a.m. yesterday, a silver 2003 Suzuki multipurpose vehicle operated by a 64-year-old Ewa woman was traveling eastbound in the contraflow lane, police said.

The female pedestrian was crossing the highway in a southbound direction when she was struck by the vehicle in the vicinity of the Dillingham Boulevard overpass. The woman was not in a marked crosswalk.

She was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition with severe head and body injuries. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said the driver and her two passengers — a 78-year-old man and 86-year-old woman, both also from Ewa — were wearing seat belts and did not suffer any injuries.

This is the 18th traffic-related fatality this year, compared to 12 at the same time last year.
