Fresh off a reorganization last week that infused $3 million in cash into its operations, Mokulele Airlines announced yesterday that it will begin four daily flights between Honolulu and Hilo starting in May.

The company, now half-owned by Indianapolis-based Republic Airways, said yesterday it will use its 70-seat Embraer 170 jets for the service, which it will debut with a special one-way fare of $35.

“;The inauguration of Mo-kulele jet service to Hilo will allow even more customers to be introduced to the most comfortable air service in the islands,”; said Scott Durgin, formerly Republic's vice president for strategic alliances who was named interim president and CEO of Mokulele Airlines last week.

Durgin replaced Bill Boyer, who was put in charge of the company's expanding sales and marketing efforts.

Mokulele, founded in 1998 as Mokulele Flight Service Inc., also operates jet service between Honolulu and Kahului, Kailua-Kona and Lihue.

Overall, it operates 56 daily flights between seven cities in the islands, using three Embraer jets and seven 208B Cessna Grand Caravans. It also offers tour flights and inter-island cargo service.

The introductory fare for the new Honolulu-Hilo flights must be purchased by April 30 and is for travel to be completed by May 31.

Hawaiian Airlines yesterday said it would match Mokulele's introductory fare for flights between Honolulu and Hilo during the same period.
