Rainbows end road trip with loss

Vinnie Catricala and Landon Hernandez hit solo home runs, but poor defensive play cost Hawaii in an 8-4 loss to Oregon State yesterday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.

Catricala finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Hernandez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in a game that was delayed 90 minutes at the start because of bad weather. Officially, the Rainbows were only charged with one error, but coach Mike Trapasso said it should have been more.

“;They had the hometown scoring going. We made at least four errors, but they were calling everything a hit,”; Trapasso said. “;Plays we usually make we didn't make and that's the thing that bothers me.”;

Hawaii finished 3-2 on its latest road trip after losing at Oregon State in its first trip back since the 2006 NCAA Regionals.

Harrison Kuroda (3-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in two innings. Lefty Ryan Davis allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief and Sam Spangler finished the game allowing one run on three hits and no walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Oregon State starter Jorge Reyes (3-1) was lights out early on, striking out seven in the first three innings. Hernandez's home run in the second gave the Rainbows a 1-0 lead, but the Beavers got it back on Logan Lotti's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

Adalberto's two-run single highlighted a three spot in the third inning for the Beavers, who took a 4-1 lead. Hawaii answered in the fourth as Hernandez hit a run-scoring single and Sean Montplaisir drew a bases-loaded walk to pull to 4-3. But with the bases loaded and two outs, Hernandez was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a ball that got away from catcher Ryan Ortiz, but he recovered and threw out Hernandez at the plate.

“;(Landon) thought the ball got farther away from the catcher, but it had some backspin on it and came right back to him,”; Trapasso said.

John Tommasini, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Beavers, tacked on a run in the sixth with an RBI single. The Beavers put two more on the board in the seventh to make it 7-3 before Catricala's home run in the eighth brought the Rainbows to within three.

Tommasini added another run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring.

The Rainbows fell to 13-8 for the season and return home today for a quick turnaround. Hawaii opens a four-game series with Coastal Carolina, ranked 15th in this week's USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 coaches poll, on Thursday.

“;We've got to get home and try to find a way to rest up and recharge the batteries,”; Trapasso said. “;This may be the best team we'll play all year on Thursday.”;
