Man in good condition after accident

A 21-year-old Wahiawa man was hospitalized yesterday morning after he drove his van into utility poles near Honolulu Airport.

Police said both speeding and alcohol were involved in the 4 a.m. crash on Kamehameha Highway near Puuhale Road.

The man was traveling westward in a 2002 Dodge van when he lost control and struck two wooden utility poles, knocking them down. He was alone in the vehicle, according to police. He was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. His condition was later upgraded to good, police said.

Preteen accused of sexual assault

Police are investigating a 12-year-old boy accused of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old boy Saturday in Pawaa.

After the 4-year-old boy's parent picked him up from baby-sitting Saturday before midnight, the boy said a 12-year-old boy living at the home sexually assaulted him, police said.

Police opened a first-degree sexual assault case. No arrests have been made.

Teen boy arrested; rifle found nearby

Police booked a 15-year-old boy who was allegedly carrying a rifle in Kalihi at about 2:50 a.m. yesterday.

A police officer in a patrol vehicle stopped after seeing the boy cradling what appeared to be a rifle, police said. The boy fled, and the officer stopped him at an adjoining parking lot, empty-handed.

The officer traced the boy's path and found a rifle in the bushes. The identification marks had been removed.

Police arrested the boy on suspicion of firearm and curfew violations.

Mother in custody on choking claim

A 29-year-old Waianae woman was arrested on suspicion of abuse Saturday after her son told police she choked him.

At about 11 p.m. the 14-year-old boy showed up at the Kapolei Station and said he was choked at home at about 7 a.m. March 11 by his mother.

Police booked the woman on two counts of abuse at her Akowai Road home and turned over the boy to Child Protective Services.
