Pearl City shows off its arms
POSTED: Sunday, March 22, 2009
The OIA's new baseball format has placed a greater premium on pitching depth.
So far, Pearl City appears well equipped for the change.
The Chargers have started six different pitchers in six OIA Red West games this season on their way to a perfect start to league play.
Pearl City got quality starts from Micah Nakasone and Edwin Izumigawa and gave their pitchers ample support at the plate in a doubleheader sweep of Waianae yesterday at the Chargers' field.
Nakasone allowed one hit and struck out four in 5 innings before a blister ended his outing in Pearl City's 10-2 win in the opener.
In the second game, Izumigawa posted five strikeouts, walked none and retired 10 batters in a row in the middle innings while protecting a 2-1 lead. The Chargers then broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning in a 7-1 victory over the Seariders (0-4).
“;You just have to have arms,”; Pearl City coach Gary Nakamoto said of the Saturday doubleheaders that have become a regular feature of the OIA schedule this season.
“;If you have a hard day you're going to end up using two or three pitchers a game and if you don't have that many pitchers it's tough. I think everybody's in the same boat.”;
Pearl City claimed the top spot in last week's Star-Bulletin Top 10 poll with a strong start despite losing a deep senior class that led the Chargers to the OIA championship and a third-place finish in the state tournament.
The juniors who waited their turn last year have stepped into starting roles as seniors as the Chargers have scored 40 runs while giving up 11 so far.
Pearl City's two returning starters - third baseman Bryson Namba and catcher Carlton Tanabe - both had first-inning homers in yesterday's games and combined to drive in nine runs in the sweep.
Namba opened the scoring in the first game with a two-run single and Tanabe followed with a three-run homer to left field to give Pearl City a 5-0 lead before Waianae could record an out in the bottom of the first inning.
Namba hit a two-run blast to left in the first inning of the second game. Pearl City wouldn't score again until the sixth, when Tanabe laced a two-run opposite-field triple into the right-field corner and Chace Numata followed with a home run to left.
“;Usually he's just a line-drive hitter,”; Nakamoto said of the Chargers shortstop. “;But he got one over.”;
Waianae started two freshmen yesterday in Joby Cabral and left-hander Alan Ibanes, who kept the Seariders close until the five-run sixth. After the Seariders gave up 13 walks in the opener, Ibanes surrendered just three and gave up three hits through five innings.
“;I think they'll get some experience this year and it'll help them in the future,”; Waianae coach Kekoa Kaluhiokalani said.
“;We were in there and you turn around and they put four on the board real quick. It's a play here and there, a pitch here and there.”;
