UH pitchers pounded in doubleheader split
POSTED: Saturday, March 21, 2009
Hawaii's biggest strength this season was nowhere to be found on the first day of the Rose City Invitational.
Starters Jayson Kramer and Jared Alexander combined to give up 11 runs in 7 2/3 innings in two games as Hawaii split a mixed doubleheader yesterday at PGE Park in Portland, Ore.
Jeff Van Doornum's RBI single in the 10th inning scored Vinnie Catricala with the go-ahead run as the Rainbows (11-7) blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning before coming back to beat Washington 9-7 in the opener for their eighth straight win.
The win streak came to an end in the second game as Portland rocked Alexander for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings in a 13-2 rout.
“;We knew that win streak was over about the fourth inning,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;As bad as we pitched today in both games, I feel fortunate to come away 1-1.”;
Alexander hadn't allowed an earned run in three starts this season. After breezing through a 1-2-3 first inning, the Pilots lit up the senior right-hander in the second. Bryant Kraus and Chase Powell started the inning with back-to-back triples. After a Riley Henricks double, Garrett Queen homered for two of his game-high six RBIs.
Alexander allowed three more runs in the third before giving way to Alex Capaul. Capaul's line wasn't pretty—eight hits, six runs and four walks in 6 1/3 innings—but he finished the game to help save Hawaii's already-thin bullpen.
“;It all depends what our starters do, but if we're able to win a game the rest of the tournament from the bullpen, it'll be because Capaul finished the game today,”; Trapasso said. “;Without (Nate) Klein and having to move (Connor) Little to the rotation, we don't have a lot of available arms.”;
Lack of pitching nearly cost the 'Bows in the first game. Hawaii pounded out 15 hits and led 7-4 when rain caused a 30-minute delay in the top of the ninth inning with two outs.
Harrison Kuroda had pitched three innings in relief of Kramer, who allowed four runs over five innings when the delay began.
He stayed in for the ninth, when the Huskies went to work.
Brendan Gardner-Young started things with a double and advanced to third on a balk. Troy Scott cut the lead to two with an RBI single to score Gardner-Young, forcing Trapasso to bring in Sam Spangler. After a single and a strikeout, Aaron Russell and Jake Rife hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie it and force extra innings.
“;I was hoping that Harry could go in there and finish it because he was throwing really well,”; Trapasso said. “;We had a three-run lead with one to go and I didn't want to go to Sam if I didn't need to.”;
The 'Bows answered in the 10th on Van Doornum's single that scored Catricala, who finished 3-for-6 with two runs. Landon Hernandez doubled to score Van Doornum and give the 'Bows a key insurance run.
Ryan Morford and Matt Roquemore each had three hits in the game and Morford and Van Doornum drove in two runs.
The 'Bows return to the field today to play Oregon at 11:30 a.m. Freshman Matt Sisto (1-1, 5.03) will start.
