Ching named to Cup qualifier roster
CHICAGO » Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley headlined a 22-man roster announced yesterday for the U.S. World Cup qualifiers at El Salvador on March 28 and against Trinidad and Tobago on April 1 in Nashville, Tenn. Hawaii's Brian Ching is also on the squad.
All 11 players on the roster started the match against Mexico on Feb. 11.
Warriors rally to beat Blue Raiders
Sascha Heinemann swept Morgan Richard 6-3, 6-4 to lead the Hawaii men's tennis team to a 4-1 win over Middle Tennessee yesterday in Montgomery, Ala.
Jeff Fitch, Leo Rosenberg and Andreas Weber also won their singles matches for the Warriors, who captured the doubles point by taking two of the three matches.
The Warriors (3-5) face No. 41 Oklahoma to close the Blue-Gray Classic today.
Pate, Wilcox earn medals at Masters track
Ron Pate of Honolulu led the 3,000-meter run in the M60 division from the start but settled for second at the USA Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships yesterday at Landover, Md.
Pate, 62, ran the distance in 11 minutes, 7.42 seconds to lose to Gary Patton of Iowa. Patton was credited with a time of 11:07.33.
Joe Wilcox, 66, of Kailua-Kona, earned a bronze medal in the 3,000 meters of the division for 65 year olds.
Friesen finishes 13th at NCAA diving
Hawaii junior Emma Friesen missed the final and finished 13th in the 3-meter dive at the NCAA Championships at College Station, Texas, yesterday.
Friesen, who placed third in the 1-meter on Friday, scored 306.30 on her best dive in the consolation bracket.
BYUH women stay unbeaten in tennis
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team did not drop a set to win a pair of matches yesterday in Montgomery, Ala.
The Seasiders swept Alabama State 7-0 in the morning then blitzed Tuskegee 5-0 in the afternoon. Elwen Li, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation, did not drop a game in beating Sheniece Rawlins of Alabama State and Jazmine Scott of Tuskegee.
The Seasiders (15-0) will take on Alabama A&M today.
» The BYUH men also swept a pair of matches yesterday, beating both Alabama State and Tuskegee 6-0.
The men (13-3) also did not drop a set, and got 6-0, 6-0 sweeps from Rong Ma at No. 1 singles against Alabama State and Romeo Juhasz at No. 4 singles against Tuskegee.
