Tourist dies while surfing off Haleiwa

A 47-year-old Japanese visitor died yesterday while surfing on the North Shore, police said.

At about noon the man and his friends were surfing at Alii Beach Park in Haleiwa when his friends noticed that the man was unresponsive on his surfboard. Lifeguards responded within minutes, police said.

The man was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he died at 1:06 p.m.

Assault of officer involves drug pipe

A 48-year-old man was charged yesterday in connection with the assault of a police officer after he allegedly punched the police officer and threw a drug pipe at him in Makaha.

Raymond Elsey Jr. of Lahaina Street was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail on suspicion of first-degree assault and two drug charges.

Police responded to a report of domestic violence at Elsey's Makaha home at about 4:10 p.m. and asked him to leave until he cooled off. Elsey took a pipe for smoking crystal methamphetamine from his pocket and threw it at the officer, then punched him in the face, police said. The officer was treated for swelling below his left eye.

Boating fatality, 60, is identified

The Medical Examiner's Office identified the 60-year-old Honolulu man who died Saturday after falling overboard near Hawaii Kai during choppy seas as Don Kusunoki.

His cause of death was drowning due to an accident, the medical examiner said.

Police nab 4 teens in assault on boy

Police arrested four teenage boys Wednesday in connection with the attempted murder of a 15-year-old boy at Mayor Wright Housing in Kalihi earlier this month.

At about 11:50 p.m. March 7, the victim was chased by a large group of males through the housing complex. Three of the suspects caught the teen and punched and kicked him, then fled on foot, police said. The boy was taken in critical condition to the hospital.

Four boys ages 17, 17, 16 and 15 were identified Wednesday as suspects in the beating and arrested in Honolulu on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder.

WINDWARD OAHU

Kamehameha Highway is closed due to pole knocked down by vehicle crash

Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions this morning about a quarter-mile north of Kualoa Ranch to repair an utility pole that was knocked down because of a traffic accident.
A Pepsi delivery truck hit a car and both vehicles hit an electrical pole before winding up in the sand on the makai side of the highway, police said. Northbound traffic was turned around at Kualoa Park, while southbound traffic was turned back at a nearby bridge. There were no reports of any injuries.
