Friesen third at NCAA Championships

Hawaii junior Emma Friesen finished third in 1-meter diving at the NCAA Championships yesterday at College Station, Texas.

Friesen, the defending national champion in the event, posted a score of 331.35 to finish behind Houston's Anastasia Pozdniakova (351.15) and Indiana's Christina Loukas (339.80).

Friesen will compete in the 3-meter championships today.

Low survives in NCAA wrestling

Saint Louis graduate Brandon Low lost his first match at the NCAA wrestling championship yesterday, but came back to win in the consolation bracket.

Low, a UC Davis sophomore, lost to Cornell's Mike Grey 10-8 in his first match in the 133-pound division. He then defeated Conor Bebee of Central Michigan 3-2. He next faces Filip Novachkov of Cal Poly today.

Wahine tennis team wins fifth straight

The Hawaii women's tennis team's winning streak reached five straight matches after a 4-3 win over No. 74 Washington State yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine (7-5) and Cougars split the singles matches 3-3. UH claimed the doubles point when Anja-Vanessa Peter and Sophie Kobuch rallied from a 6-4 deficit to defeat Ekaterina Kamendova and Aleksandra Cekic 8-6.

» The UH men's tennis team lost to No. 29 Wisconsin 4-2 at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala.

Hawaii got singles wins from Sascha Heinemann over Luke Rassow-Kantor 6-2, 6-1 and Jeff Fitch over Michael Dierberger 7-6, 6-3. Wisconsin's Mortiz Baumann (No. 36) defeated No. 75 Dennis Lajola 6-2, 6-0 in a matchup of nationally ranked players.

Send-off party for junior surf team

A send-off party for the Verizon Wireless Hawaii Junior Surf Team is set for 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Hard Rock Cafe in Waikiki.

Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona will be joined by surfers Tommy Asing, Rainos Hayes, Joel Centeio and Bonga Perkins in recognizing the 12-member team that will compete in the International Surfing Association junior championships in Ecuador, starting March 27.

Vulcans split softball doubleheader

Amber Waracka tossed a four-hitter as Hawaii-Hilo salvaged a split of yesterday's doubleheader against Dixie State with a 1-0 win at Old Kona Airport field.

Waracka took the loss in Dixie State's 2-0 win in the opener and had 16 strikeouts and one walk in the doubleheader. Dana Lee's RBI single in the second inning accounted for the lone run in the second game.

Seasiders tennis teams roll to wins

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team rolled to a 7-2 win over Fort Valley State and the Seasiders men's team swept to a 9-0 victory yesterday in Fort Valley, Ga.

The Division II second-ranked Seasiders women's team improved to 15-0, dropping just three games in five singles matches. The No. 25 men's team also won all six singles matches in straight sets.

Hawaii Pacific wins golf tri-match

The Hawaii Pacific men's golf team held off Brigham-Hawaii to win a three-team match yesterday at Ewa Beach Golf Club.

The Sea Warriors posted a team total of 303 to finish two strokes ahead of the Seasiders. Chaminade was third at 368.

BYUH's Derek Hall was the medalist with a 1-over-par 73.
