Panel to discuss dire times in arts

The art community's struggle for survival in these rough economic times will be the subject of a roundtable discussion, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Atherton Performing Arts Studio, 738 Kaheka St.

The discussion, sponsored by Hawaii Public Radio and Honolulu Magazine, was prompted by the magazine's recent article, “;Art in a Storm,”; which examined the layoffs, funding cuts and other financial problems that have hit local arts and culture institutions.

Panelists will include Tim Bostock, ARTS at Marks Garage and Hawaii Theatre for Youth; Selena Ching, Hawaii Youth Symphony; Peter Shaindlin, Honolulu Symphony; Blair Collis, Bishop Museum; Marilyn Cristofori, Hawaii Arts Alliance; Karen Tiller, Hawaii Opera Theatre; and Harry Wong, Kumu Kahua Theatre.

Moderator will be Bob Sandla, host of Hawaii Public Radio's “;Business of the Arts.”; The discussion will be taped, with an edited version aired on Sandla's show at 6 p.m. Sunday on KHPR-FM (88.1), and 5 p.m. next Tuesday on KIPO-FM (89.3).

Celebrate the bounty of Hawaii's farms

Hawaii's agricultural community struts its stuff today at the state Capitol, presenting 2009 Agriculture Sustainability Day.

The third annual event, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the fourth-floor walkway, includes a farmers' market showcasing locally grown products, plus exhibits featuring the people who make up Hawaii's diverse agricultural industry.

Proceeds from the farmers' market will be donated to the Hawaii Food Bank. Call 848-2074.
