Seasiders will play on Wednesday

Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball coach Ken Wagner is incensed at an NCAA decision to move his team's Division II West regional final against Cal Poly Pomona from tomorrow to Wednesday.

The game between the host Seasiders and the Broncos was originally scheduled for tomorrow night at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie. The decision stemmed from Pomona's inability to get its entire team on a single flight from Seattle to Honolulu yesterday.

“;It's inconsiderate,”; Wagner said. “;You have fans here with (plane) tickets home on Wednesday morning and some of them can't stay to watch the game. And if they do stay it's going to cost more. I think the only thing they didn't take into consideration is the host school.

“;It's something the only legal monopoly in the whole country (the NCAA) could do without anyone fighting it.”;

Wagner added that previous TV and radio arrangements for the game are up in the air with the new date.

The Broncos (22-7) arrive today. Tip-off on Wednesday is at 7:30 p.m.

BYUH (27-1) beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 84-71 in a second-round game Saturday night to advance to the round-of-16 game. The third-ranked Seasiders (27-1) are riding a 24-game winning streak. If they win Wednesday, they advance to the NCAA II quarterfinals in Springfield, Mass., next week.

Chan takes Hawaii State Amateur title

Lorens Chan shot a 3-under 69 yesterday to capture the Hawaii State Amateur golf championship by eight shots at Pearl Country Club.

Chan, a freshman at 'Iolani, finished the rain-shortened tournament at 10-under 206. The tourney was cut from four rounds to three after Saturday's scheduled third round was canceled.

Kauai's Jonathan Ota finished second at 2-under 214, with Ryan Perez in third place at 1-under 215.

Hawaii sailing team finishes in 10th

The Hawaii coed sailing team placed 10th at the St. Mary's Team Race held Saturday and yesterday at St. Mary's, Md.

The Rainbows finished 0-9 during the round-robin competition.

Up next for UH is the California State Racing Championships in Long Beach, Calif., later this month.

Dilliner wins wrestling championship

Kailua High alum Monique Dilliner won the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Championship on Saturday at Hampton University in Virginia.

Dilliner, a 2007 state wrestling champion for Kailua, also helped Yakima Valley Community College earn the team championship.

HPU players get weekly honors

Hawaii Pacific baseball players Jacob Valentine and BA Garner were chosen as the PacWest Conference player and pitcher of the week.

Valentine, a senior outfielder from Vancouver, Wash., earned the honor for the second straight week after leading HPU to a 3-1 record against Grand Canyon in a weekend series. Batting .500, Valentine scored seven runs with eight RBIs for the Sea Warriors.

Garner, a senior closer from Federal, Wash., registered a 0.00 ERA against Grand Canyon while collecting two saves. Garner allowed four singles and struck out five batters in three innings.
