For the third night in a row, Kevin Macdonald found himself in pressure situations at the plate.

And for the third straight game, the Hawaii first baseman provided a game-turning swing.

Macdonald's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning last night erased a Loyola Marymount lead and sent the Rainbows to a 9-5 win over the Lions before a crowd of 2,161 at Les Murakami Stadium.

Macdonald ended Thursday's series opener with an RBI single in the 10th inning. An error on his two-out grounder scored the tying runs in the eighth inning of UH's 3-2 win on Friday.

Last night, UH's clean-up hitter came through with a two-out RBI double to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth. Then with UH trailing 5-3 in the seventh, he crushed a three-run homer to left field to propel the Rainbows to their sixth straight win.

“;He continues to have the hot hand for us,”; UH coach Mike Trapasso said. “;Whether it's a flare, an error or a bomb, he's been the right man at the right time for us. He's swinging well and that's the main thing.”;

UH reliever Harrison Kuroda earned the win with 2 1/3 shutout innings to improve to 3-0.

The Rainbows (9-6) will try to complete the sweep of the four-game series in today's 1:05 p.m. finale, while LMU (8-10) will look to end an eight-game skid.

“;Basically I told our guys if you want to be a great club you have to come out in these situations and stay in the moment,”; Trapasso said. “;If we come out (today) throwing our gloves on the field thinking we're all that because we've won six in a row, it'll turn in a heartbeat. That's the game of baseball.”;

Hawaii jumped in front last night when Landon Hernandez launched Alex Gillingham's first pitch of the second inning over the left-field fence for his first home run of the season. Matt Roquemore singled one out later, stole second and scored when Sean Montplaisir looped a two-out single into left field.

A rare fit of wildness by Jared Alexander fueled LMU's three-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning. Kyle Spraker drew a walk, the first issued by Alexander this season, to start the inning. Ryan Wheeler reached on an error by second baseman Shane Hoey and Angelo Songco walked to load the bases with no outs.

After a strike out, T.J. Bernardy's sacrifice fly to right scored Spraker with the Lions' first run and moved Wheeler to third. A wild pitch allowed Songco to advance to second and Ryan Hawthorne drilled a two-run single through the left side of the infield to give the Lions a 3-2 lead.

The Rainbows tied the game in the fifth on Macdonald's two-out RBI double down the third-base line, bringing Kolten Wong around from second.

That got Alexander off the hook for the decision as the senior, still working with a pitch-count limitation, was relieved by left-hander Ryan Davis to start the sixth inning.

Davis retired the first five batters he faced before the Lions reclaimed the lead with a two-out rally in the seventh. Shon Roe singled to right field and after Jonathan Johnson walked on four pitches, Spraker dropped a single into right field to drive in Roe. Wheeler followed with a liner to center to push the Lions' lead to 5-3 and chase Davis from the game. Harrison Kuroda came in and struck out Songco to end the inning.

But the LMU lead was short lived, as a leadoff walk to Garcia and a single by Wong preceded Macdonald's three-run blast to left off LMU reliever Jason Wheeler.

“;It was a changeup and I got lucky it went over the fence,”; Macdonald said. “;When you've got Vinnie (Catricala) hitting in front of you it seems like there are going to be guys on base whenever I'm up. Luckily the last few nights I've gotten lucky and gotten some hits.”;

The Rainbows added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Easton Torigoe and Montplaisir walked to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch allowed Ryan Morford—pinch running for Torigoe—to score and Montplaisir followed him to the plate from second. After a walk to Wong and a single by Catricala, Hernandez blooped a single to right to push the UH lead to 9-5.

The Rainbows close their homestand today before heading to the mainland to play in the Rose City Baseball Invitational in Portland, Ore.
