Rain ends tournament early

Rain canceled the final day of play at the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Field, washing out the four scheduled games.

Host Hawaii (11-6) finished its final preseason tournament 2-3. The Rainbow Wahine held off Memphis 5-3 in Friday night's late contest that was called in the bottom of the sixth due to rain.

Hawaii scored all its runs in the first, highlighted by a grand slam to right by Amanda Tauali'i.

The Wahine open Western Athletic Conference play at Louisiana Tech Friday.

UH divers fail to qualify

Hawaii freshmen divers Douglas Cohen and Daniella Nero missed out on qualifying for this week's NCAA Championships when failing to finish in the top eight of their respective competitions.

Cohen finished fifth and Nero 13th in the NCAA Zone E Qualifying platform event yesterday in Austin, Texas.

The lone Hawaii representative this week will be junior Emma Friesen, who won both the 1- and 3-meter events. Friesen is the defending national champion in the 1-meter.

Vinton headlines QB Club

Oceanic Time Warner Cable sports director Dave Vinton, Kamehameha varsity boys basketball head coach Jesse Nakanishi and Kailua varsity boys basketball head coach Tim Harrison will speak tomorrow at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's weekly luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel's International Ballroom.

Nakanishi will talk about Kamehameha's victory in this year's state championship, a first for the program since 1992. Meanwhile, Harrison will shed light on Kailua's Division II State Championship.

Vinton, Nakanishi and Harrison will be available to answer any questions.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program starting at noon.

HPU 11th at Kauai Cup

Charlie Renfro finished in a tie for 16th to help Hawaii Pacific to an 11th-place finish at the Kauai Collegiate Cup at the Wailea Golf Course.

Renfro carded a 1-over 73 yesterday to finish at 222, 14 strokes behind medalist Logan Blondell of Georgia Southern.

Georgia Southern and East Tennessee State shared first at 860 in the 11-team event.

Dixie State takes 2 from BYUH

Dixie State remained undefeated in PacWest softball yesterday, topping Brigham Young-Hawaii 4-1 and 7-2 in a doubleheader at the BYUH Field.

Haley Schumers scattered five hits, striking out five, in the complete-game win in Game 1. Schumers lost her shutout bid when Morgan Necaise homered to left to open the bottom of the seventh.

In the second game, the Seasiders (7-15, 3-7) scored all of their runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. But the Red Storm (21-1, 10-0) came back with six runs with two outs in the third, highlighted by Kourtnie Schlacter's two-run double.
