Friesen takes another diving title

Hawaii junior Emma Friesen completed a sweep of the women's springboard diving events when winning the 1-meter at yesterday's NCAA Zone E Qualifying Meet in Austin, Texas.

Friesen, the defending 1-meter NCAA champion, won the 3-meter event Thursday. This is the third consecutive year that she has advanced to the NCAA championships.

Rainbow Wahine freshman Daniella Nero finished ninth in yesterday's 1-meter competition. Warrior freshman Douglas Cohen placed eighth in the yesterday's 3-meter men's event.

Nero and Cohen will compete today in the platform.

Chan takes Stroke Play lead

'Iolani freshman Lorens Chan carded a 6-under 66 yesterday to take a two-stroke into today's third round of the Hawaii State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country.

Chan, who shared second after Thursday's 71, moved ahead of the 58-player field at 137 with the low round of the day. Two strokes back was former University of Hawaii golfer Ryan Perez (68-139) while first-round leader Jonathan Ota shot his second straight 70 for third at 140.

Honors for Kaufman, Wichmann

Hawaii high jumper Amber Kaufman and pentathlete Annett Wichmann earned All-America honors yesterday after finishing in the top eight of their respective disciplines at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at College Station, Texas.

Kaufman tied for sixth after clearing her first three heights but failing at her fourth (6 feet). Destinee Hooker of Texas won the event with an NCAA record 6-6.

Wichmann, who finished fourth last season, finished seventh yesterday. She had the top throw in the shot put (45-3.5) and set UH records in the high jump (5-8.75) and long jump (18-3.75) to finish with 4,118 points. BYU's Amy Menlove won with 4,342.

Hawaii opens the outdoor season next Saturday when it hosts the Rainbow Relays at Ching Field.

HPU tops Grand Canyon in baseball

Hawaii Pacific scored five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to rally past Grand Canyon 12-9 in the first game of a PacWest baseball doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park yesterday.

Jonah Hobsen drove in three runs for the Sea Warriors (17-4, 5-2). The Lopes dropped to 9-13 and 3-4.

Vulcans sweep in women's tennis

The Hawaii-Hilo women's tennis team improved to 7-7 yesterday after winning two matches at the UHH courts.

The Vulcans edged Sonoma State 5-4 then topped Academy of Art 6-3. Eve Castaing and Christie Pagatpatan were undefeated with the pair teaming up for two victories at No. 1 doubles then winning both of their respective singles matches, Castaing at No. 1 and Pagatpatan at No. 2.

HPU softball wins twice with shutouts

Courtney Kessell scattered four hits, striking out six, and Hawaii Pacific shut out Notre Dame de Namur 5-0 in the first game of a PacWest softball doubleheader yesterday at Sea Warrior Field.

The Sea Warriors (17-3, 7-1) completed the sweep of the Argos (7-9-1, 0-8) with a 6-0 victory in the second game. Sherise Musquiz picked the win, allowing five hits over six innings, and reliever Ashley Valine preserved the shutout when getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh with a game-ending double play.

» Amber Waracka tossed a two-hitter, striking out 12, as the Hawaii-Hilo softball team shut out Brigham Young-Hawaii 3-0 in the first game of a PacWest doubleheader at BYUH field.

The Vulcans (12-10, 5-9 PWC) completed the sweep, holding off the Seasiders (7-15, 3-5) in the second game 3-2. Nicole Alconcel's RBI-double highlighted a three-run third for Hilo

In the opener, the Vulcans managed three hits, the biggest being Aisha Sueda's two-run homer in the top of the sixth that provided the final score.
