Kevin Macdonald didn't make great contact.

But it was enough.

The Hawaii first baseman's looping single into left field drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting the Rainbows to a 6-5 victory over Loyola Marymount last night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Hawaii (7-6) extended its winning streak to four games despite squandering a five-run lead, while Loyola Marymount (8-8) dropped its sixth straight.

Josh Slaats (2-1) picked up the win in relief for the Rainbows. Xavier Esquivel (2-2) took the loss for the Lions.

Fresh off their series win over Mississippi State, Hawaii led 5-0 after six innings, only to see the Lions score a single run in the seventh and add three more in the eighth.

An error with two outs in the ninth kept LMU alive and the Lions were down to their last strike when Shon Roe lined an RBI single to center off of UH reliever Sam Spangler to tie the game.

The Rainbows loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but came up empty when Esquivel struck out Alex Myers and Shane Hoey to send the game into extra innings.

LMU then loaded the bases with one out in the 10th and pinch hitter Ollie Enos lifted a fly ball to Matt Roquemore in left field. Roquemore made the catch and threw out Kyle Spraker at the plate to end the threat.

UH shortstop Greg Garcia walked with one out in the bottom of the 10th and stole second. After Kolten Wong struck out looking, Vinnie Catricala—4-for-4 with a two-run triple and a double to that point—was intentionally walked.

Macdonald then dropped in the game-winning hit, scoring Garcia from second with the game-winner.

“;I was just trying to see the ball deep (into the strike zone) and trust my hands,”; Macdonald said. “;But he fooled me and I kind of got lucky. I'm just happy we played as a team and we got it done—no matter how it happened.”;

Hawaii starter Jayson Kramer breezed through the first six innings on 66 pitches before giving up a run in the seventh and was charged with three more in the eighth to end his night and didn't figure in the decision. He struck out six while walking none.

“;The shame of it is Kramer doesn't get the decision when he really pitched well,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;When you've got somebody down, you've got to make pitches. We didn't make pitches and we didn't make plays.

“;Once they tied it all the momentum went to their side. But I'll never question the toughness, the resilience and the character of our kids.”;

The Rainbows broke on top in the bottom of the third inning on Catricala's two-run triple off the right-field fence. Hawaii pushed the lead to 4-0 on back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth inning by Hoey and Roquemore, who later scored UH's fifth run on a wild pitch.

Loyola Marymount finally broke through against Kramer in the seventh on Angelo Songco's double and kept clawing in the eighth when pinch hitter Brad Bauer flared a single to right to score Roe from third.

Another single by Spraker brought the tying run to the plate and ended Kramer's night. Ryan Wheeler then hammered a double off of Spangler to score Bauer and Spraker and cut the UH lead to 5-4. Wheeler moved to third on a wild pitch, but Spangler stranded him there by getting Songco to strike out swinging.

Spangler quickly got two outs in the ninth before Ryan Hawthorne reached base when Catricala couldn't handle a hard grounder. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and Roe, down to his last strike, lined a single to center to tie the game.

“;The one thing we heard about Loyola was they will play to the last out and they did,”; Trapasso said.

The four-game series resumes today with Nate Klein scheduled to start for the Rainbows against LMU's Ernie Cho.
