Assets students raise $2,500

Students at Assets School raised more than $2,500 in a “;Laps for Leukemia”; walk-a-thon in January for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The event was aimed at promoting health and fitness, and raising funds for blood cancer research and patient services.

The Friendly Isle United Fund and the United Way on Maui, Oahu and Kauai received $37,400 as part of the Monsanto Fund's annual philanthropic donations. Maui United Way received $19,000; the Friendly Isle United Fund, $6,250; and Kauai United Way, $1,750.

Save the FoodBasket was awarded $25,000 from MAC Cosmetics to fund the Rural Home Delivery Program to support low-income families affected by HIV/AIDS. The FoodBasket provides hot lunches, grocery and toiletry distribution, home delivery and an extensive vitamin and nutrition program at no cost to the client.

Jeoffrey S. Cudiamat, an engineering college alumnus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, was named 2009 Young Engineer of the Year by the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies. Reece Iwami of UH-Manoa was named 2009 Student Engineer of the Year. Cudiamat is owner and chief executive officer of both Structural Hawaii Inc. and Cudiamat Design and Engineering Services, based in the Philippines. He is chief engineer and director of the city's Facilities Maintenance Department. Iwami was one of 20 winners of the UH Board of Regents Scholarship as a senior from Castle High School in 2006. This academic year, he won a $10,000 scholarship from the National Consortium for Measurement and Signature Intelligence Research.
