Ostrowski tabbed by ocean agency

The Board of Trustees of the Oceanic Institute named Anthony Ostrowski as interim president.

Ostrowski was vice president and director of the U.S. Marine Shrimp Farming Program at the institute.

He replaces Bruce Anderson, who is now director of health and science programs at Hawaii Pacific University.

Ostrowski will serve until a permanent successor is named by a search committee.

The institute is affiliated with HPU.

Ship leaving isles to drill ocean floor

An international expedition will set out from Honolulu this week to drill deep holes in the Pacific Ocean floor in search of clues about the past and future of our planet.

The research vessel JOIDES Resolution will make two nine-week trips this year as part of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program.

University of Michigan paleontologist Ted Moore will take his third voyage aboard the vessel, which has dug as deep as 1.3 miles into the ocean floor.

Moore and his colleagues will seek sediment from the equatorial Pacific dating back 65 million years in an area more than 1,000 miles south-southeast of Hawaii.

It is designed to shed light on climate change, particularly why the earth was often much warmer than today despite steady sunshine.

McKinley gets funds for locker room

McKinley High School is getting nearly $1.8 million for a new girls athletic locker room and shower facilities.

The state has already released $204,000 for project design, Gov. Linda Lingle announced Thursday.

Construction of the project is scheduled to begin in July 2010 and be completed in May 2011.
