Grove, Nelson earn TKO victories

Not only did Hilo's Shane Nelson and Maui's Kendall Grove pull out victories at UFC 96 last night in Columbus, Ohio, but they did so in convincing fashion.

Nelson (13-3, 2-0 UFC) started things off with a TKO victory over Aaron Riley in a fight that lasted all of 44 seconds. After Riley scored an early takedown, Nelson scrambled back to his feet and connected with a right hand that put Riley on the mat. He followed up with a series of strikes on the ground, forcing the referee to stop the fight, much to the protest of Riley.

Grove (12-5, 5-2) needed longer to beat Jason Day by TKO, but not by much. His fight lasted 92 seconds, as Grove dropped Day with a straight right and followed up with a series of elbows before the referee stopped the bout.

In the main event, former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson won his second consecutive bout, defeating Keith Jardine by unanimous decision.

Wahine close regular season with loss

Nevada defeated Hawaii 75-57 in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game yesterday at Reno. Nev.

Megan Tinnin scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Wahine, who will stay in Reno and play in the WAC tournament against ninth-seeded San Jose State on Tuesday.

The Rainbow Wahine finished the regular season 7-22 and 4-12 in the conference. Nevada ended 16-13 and 10-6.

Coolen to speak at QB Club luncheon

Hawaii women's softball coach Bob Coolen headlines the program at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Also scheduled to speak are Michael Story, sports manager for the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and sports writer Wes Nakama.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel. The program follows at noon.

Alves leads BYU-Hawaii in rout

Lucas Alves scored 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting and added 10 rebounds to lead Division II No. 3 Brigham Young-Hawaii past Hawaii Pacific 107-70 yesterday in a men's basketball game last night at Laie.

Virgil Buensuceso and Nathan Sims added 15 points apiece for the Seasiders (25-1, 12-0).

» Brigham Young-Hawaii used a big second half to put away Hawaii Pacific 82-72 yesterday in a women's basketball game at Laie.

The Seasiders shot 59 percent from the floor and put up 46 points after the break to earn the victory.

Latoya Wily scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for BYUH.

Silverswords fall again in softball

Waseda University (Japan) defeated Chaminade 6-3 and 5-0 in a softball doubleheader yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Skye Virtudes hit a two-run homer for the Silverswords in the first game. In the second game, Chaminade managed only one hit.

The Silverswords dropped to 1-17.
