Flemings gets national honor

Hawaii junior forward Roderick Flemings was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 6 second team yesterday.

He is the fifth Rainbow Warrior in the last seven years (following Predrag Savovic, Carl English, Michael Kuebler and Julian Sensley) to receive the NABC distinction.

Flemings leads the Rainbows with 16.8 points per game and the Western Athletic Conference in minutes per game at 35.9.

A total of 240 players were selected to 24 all-district teams by member coaches. WAC players Gary Wilkinson (Utah State), Jahmar Young (New Mexico State), Mac Hopson (Idaho), and Luke Babbitt and Armon Johnson (Nevada) were picked as the District 6 first team.

“;It's a great accomplishment for me,”; Flemings said after practice yesterday. “;A lot of coaches probably respect my game out there, so it's a good accomplishment. I could get a lot better, but I see a lot of guys in there that I respect out of the conference.”;

UH plays its WAC finale at the Stan Sheriff Center tomorrow against NMSU at 7 p.m.

Mayhem/Kala fight pushed back

The debut of KINGDOM MMA, the new mixed martial arts organization created by former Icon Sport and Superbrawl founder T. Jay Thompson, has been pushed back to April 18 at the Blaisdell Arena.

Tickets already purchased can be used at the April 18 show or refunded at the place of purchase.

The main event features a showdown between Jason “;Mayhem”; Miller and Kala Kolohe Hose. The winner will be crowned KINGDOM's first middleweight champion.

The event was pushed back 15 days after a mix-up in paperwork between Thompson and the Department of Consumer Affairs.

According to Thompson, as part of increased regulation of the sport, all fighters are mandated to be medically cleared by a local doctor. Miller's medical clearance came from a doctor residing on the mainland, which the DCCA would not approve.

DCCA Complaints and Enforcement Officer Jo Ann Uchida did not return calls yesterday.

Wahine shut out Broncos

Courtney Baughman fired a one-hit shutout and Amanda Tauali'i went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs as Hawaii blanked Santa Clara 9-0 in five innings in the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium last night.

The Rainbow Wahine (8-11) scored nine runs on eight hits. After Dara Pagaduan drew a walk in the top of the first inning and stole second, Tauali'i drove an opposite-field double to the left-center field gap to drive her home to start the scoring.

The Wahine added five runs in the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 9-0 in the game, which was eventually called due to the mercy rule.

Today, Hawaii faces No. 25 Mississippi State at 5 p.m. and then Florida Gulf Coast at 7.

The first game is a rematch of last season's NCAA regionals in Tempe, Ariz., when the Wahine beat the Bulldogs twice to eliminate them from the tournament.

BYUH teams get all-academic honors

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's and women's cross country teams have been honored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as all-academic teams.

Both teams had the highest cumulative grade-point average in the PacWest Conference.

In order to receive the honor, the team grade-point average must be over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. It is the second consecutive honor for each program.

Chang basketball player of the week

The PacWest Conference picked Brigham Young-Hawaii freshman guard Jet Chang as player of the week after leading the Seasiders to three wins last week.

Chang averaged 17.3 points per game, shot 59.5 percent and went 6-for-10 from 3-point range.

UHH tips Grand Canyon in softball

Hawaii-Hilo defeated Grand Canyon 4-2 yesterday in the first game of what was supposed to be a doubleheader.

The opener was cut short after just five innings due to rainy conditions, and the second game was postponed until 1 p.m. today.

Pitcher Amber Waracka picked up the win for the Vulcans.

» Hawaii-Hilo sophomore pitcher Christina Pedroza picked up PacWest pitcher of the week honors after two shutout victories last week over Lock Haven (Pa.), the No. 1 team in Division II.

Pedroza allowed 10 hits with 10 strikeouts in 22 innings over a span of four games last week.

HPU shuts out Grand Canyon in tennis

Division II No. 7 Hawaii Pacific blanked Grand Canyon 9-0 in men's tennis yesterday in Waipahu, improving to 6-1.

Nikola Petrov and Jan Hroch won in both singles and doubles matches for the Sea Warriors.
