Punahou beats Campbell

Punahou didn't exactly burn up the nets last night. The way the Buffanblu played defense, they didn't need to.

Punahou advanced in its quest to defend its state title with a 51-32 win over Campbell in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.
The Buffanblu shot just 37 percent from the field in the game, but limited the Sabers to 11 second-half points to pull away and set up a quarterfinal matchup with Kahuku tonight.
“;That's what we've been preaching all year,”; Punahou coach Dan Hale said. “;Sometimes the ball doesn't fall too well, and we have to rely on defense. I was really proud of the boys fighting against a very good team and kept up that defensive pressure all the way.”;
The Buffanblu will face the OIA Red champion and second-seeded Red Raiders for the third time this season at 7 p.m.
Campbell, fourth in the OIA Red playoffs, stayed with the Buffanblu through the first half and trailed 26-21 at halftime.
But the Sabers couldn't muster enough offense in the second half to threaten Punahou, which went 14-for-18 from the free-throw line after the break to steadily inch away.
Campbell shot 32 percent for the game, going 4-for-18 from the field in the second half.
“;They pressured us, but the pressure didn't bother us. We kind of expected that. We just didn't finish shots,”; Campbell coach Zaricke Jackson said. “;We missed a lot of shots around the rim that could have made the difference.”;
Taylor Crabb came off the bench to lead Punahou with 12 points. Point guard Shane Yoshiyama scored all of his eight points in the first half to help Punahou take the early lead and directed the offense in the second half as the Buffanblu protected their lead.
“;I just wanted to make sure the offense flowed,”; Yoshiyama said.
With Punahou leading by five, neither team managed to score in the first 3:50 of the second half. Campbell guard Zachery Manuel's layup cut the lead to 26-23. But the Sabers would get no closer as Henry Cassiday answered with a driving shot and Crabb scored Punahou's next seven points to stretch the lead to 35-27.

The Raiders opened the third quarter with a 15-4 run to take control and advance to today's quarterfinal against BIIF champion and third seed Waiakea.
'Iolani guard Kainoa Chu led all scorers with 17 points. Forward Pablo Warner finished with 11 points and had six of 'Iolani's 21 steals as the Lunas committed 31 turnovers against the Raiders' defensive pressure.
