Wahine open tourney with a rout

Dara Pagaduan's two-out, two-run homer to left in the first inning set the tone as Hawaii shut out Mount St. Mary's 8-0 in the six-inning, run-rule-shortened opener of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine (7-11) added three runs in the fourth, using three hits, two hit batters and an error to pull away from the Mountaineers (1-4). Hawaii added two in the fifth on Alexandra Aguirre's triple to right-center and ended the game with one out in the sixth when Tanisha Milca scored on a fielder's choice.

Hawaii freshman pitcher Stephanie Ricketts gave up just one hit, striking out seven and walking two, in a complete-game victory.

Vulcans top Sea Warriors

Less than a week after routing Hawaii Pacific by 25, Hawaii-Hilo eked out an 85-76 victory over the Sea Warriors in last night's nonconference men's basketball game at the Blaisdell Arena.

It was the third straight win for the Vulcans (15-11). The Sea Warriors, losing their sixth in a row, dropped to 9-15.

» In the earlier women's game, Hawaii Pacific went on a 27-10 run in the final 3 minutes to pull out a 76-63 victory over Hawaii-Hilo.

Sheila Azevedo led the Vulcans (14-9) with 19 points. The Sea Warriors improved to 14-13.

Lock Haven takes 2 in softball

Ilia Lopez doubled in the game's only run as Lock Haven edged Brigham Young-Hawaii in the first game of a softball doubleheader yesterday at the BYUH field.

The Bald Eagles (5-3) shut out the Seasiders 8-0 in the six-inning run-rule-shortened second game.

BYUH pitcher Katresha Veazie held Lock Haven to just two hits in the opener, but the Seasiders (7-13) couldn't capitalize on their five hits.

BYUH stays atop regional basketball poll

Brigham Young-Hawaii remained No. 1 in the NCAA Division II West Regional men's basketball poll yesterday.

The Seasiders (23-1) are 17-0 in regional play and ranked third nationally. BYUH puts its school-record 20-game winning streak on the line when hosting Hawaii Pacific tomorrow.

Seasiders roll in men's tennis

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's tennis team dropped just three games in sweeping Grand Canyon 9-0 yesterday at the BYUH courts

The Seasiders, ranked 27th nationally, improved to 8-2. The Antelopes fell to 1-9.
