Wind keeps rescue workers busy

Firefighters rescued 11 people from the ocean yesterday after two outrigger canoes overturned in windy weather in Kailua, a fire official said.

At 11:09 a.m. a large wave flipped the canoes as they were crossing Kailua Bay together toward the Mokulua Islands, said Capt. Robert Main.

A caller from shore reported the accident.

Firefighters responded with a rescue watercraft and found one of the canoes had already been righted with people holding on. A man and a woman believed to be missing were found on the islands. The man swam there, and the woman got a ride from a kayaker, Main said.

Firefighters tied the two canoes together and brought all 11 back to shore aboard the canoes. The canoeists had only cuts and scrapes. At about the same time, a caller reported a windsurfer in distress off Flat Island in Kailua Bay, Main said.

Firefighters responded, but lifeguards had already brought the person back to shore.

Suspect in stabbing sought

Police are looking for a man who stabbed a 30-year-old homeless man several times Saturday in a Wahiawa park.

At 10:54 p.m. the victim was drinking beer with another man in a shack at Wahiawa State Freshwater Park when he heard someone outside, police said.

Outside, a man who appeared to be in his 20s approached him and said he was going to kill him, police said.

The attacker stabbed the victim's left arm with a 3-inch folding knife. When the victim ran back into the shack, the suspect followed him and stabbed him in his head and neck. He then dropped the weapon and jumped into a parked vehicle on Avocado Street and fled the scene, police said.

Paramedics took the man in stable condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Police opened a second-degree attempted murder case.

Family turns in alleged bank robber

The family of a 34-year-old Kaimuki man turned him in after he told them about robbing a McCully bank last week, police said.

On Thursday the man allegedly demanded money from a teller at the Central Pacific Bank on South King Street. He claimed to have a knife, police said. The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of cash before he fled.

On Saturday at 8:40 p.m., family members turned him in to the main police station after he told them about the robbery, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

Teen riding mo-ped injured in crash

A teenager was in serious condition yesterday after he crashed his mo-ped near Benjamin Parker Elementary school in Kaneohe, officials said.

Paramedics took the boy to a local trauma center, said Bryan Cheplic, Emergency Services Department spokesman.

Police got a call at 11:28 a.m. reporting the mo-ped rider was on the ground fronting 45-259 Waikalua Road.

Broken Waikiki water main fixed

Crews from the Board of Water Supply finished fixing a broken water main on Kaiulani Avenue in Waikiki early yesterday morning.

The break in the 12-inch main, reported at 6 p.m. Saturday, forced the closure of one mauka-bound lane on Kaiulani between Prince Edward Street and Kuhio Avenue. The water was back on at 3:30 a.m., and crews were off the road by 10 a.m., a utility spokeswoman said.
