The Gauchos (4-2) doubled the previous season high of five runs allowed by the Rainbows pitching staff by jumping on freshman starter Matt Sisto early and often.

Sisto (1-1) was superb in his first collegiate outing, holding No. 5 UC Irvine to two runs over seven innings. Yesterday was a different story, as UCSB scored two runs in the first inning and finished with runs in six of the eight innings it came to bat.

“;Our freshman pitchers just struggled today, but we just need to pitch tomorrow like we did Thursday and Friday,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said.

John DeAlba added three hits and two runs for UCSB and Brian Gump tripled and drove in two runs.

Gauchos starter Joe Gardner (1-0) made it into the eighth inning, allowing three hits and three runs with one walk and eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.

Sisto fared quite differently, allowing seven hits and five runs in three innings. It was the shortest outing by a Rainbows starter this year.

Valaika started things off with a two-run single in the first to give UCSB a 2-0 lead. Gump made it 3-0 in the second with a triple that scored Mark Maddow, who singled and stole second with one out. Ryan Cavan followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Sisto struck out the first two batters in the third, but drilled DeAlba with a pitch. Robby Cummings followed with an RBI double to score DeAlba before Sisto ended his day by getting Marty Mullins to pop out.

Vinnie Catricala put the Rainbows (3-4) on the board with a solo home run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-1.

After taking an inning off, the Gauchos offense went back to work in the fifth. Valaika and DeAlba singled with one out off Connor Little, who walked Cummings to load the bases. Mullins scored Valaika on a sacrifice fly and Maddow singled home DeAlba to make it 7-1.

The Gauchos led 8-2 in the eighth with two outs when Gardner was replaced by reliever Jesse Meaux. Kolten Wong doubled down the left-field line to score Ryan Morford, who walked. Wong advanced to third on a bunt single by Greg Garcia and pinch hitter Josh Chevalier scored Wong on an RBI single. Easton Torigoe hit for Jeff Van Doornum with a chance to bring the game-tying run to the plate, but struck out.

Garcia was the only Rainbow to finish with two hits and Morford doubled and scored twice.

“;We played real well the first two days and didn't play so well today,”; Trapasso said. “;(Three and one) would be a great trip for this team.”;

UH wraps up its four-game road trip today against Minnesota at 11 a.m. Hawaii time.
