Crash hurts bicyclist, kids in tow

A bicyclist towing two toddlers in a wagon was in critical condition and the toddlers in serious condition yesterday after a car hit the bike on the North Shore, police said.

Police said that at 8:04 a.m. the woman was traveling Haleiwa-bound in the bike lane on Kamehameha Highway about 85 feet east of Ke Waena Road when a 1991 Nissan sedan going in the opposite direction veered into her path and hit her head-on. The woman flew off the bike, hit the car's windshield and landed in the shoulder of the road. The car continued for another 80 feet, pushing two boys, age 5 and 3, in a wagon attached to the bike.

The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken with head injuries to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. Her age was not known. The two boys also were taken to Queen's. The 44-year-old Haleiwa woman driving the car was not injured. Police said speed, drugs or alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.

Gusts damage Kau High School

Big Island police said strong winds damaged the roof of Kau High School yesterday during a statewide high wind advisory.

At about 11:30 a.m. Big Island firefighters responded to 963150 Pikake St. in Pahala town and found a 3,200-square foot section of the main building's roof blown off. An adjoining roof section also appeared loose, a Big Island fire news release said.

Firefighters said witnesses reported seeing a “;dust devil”; cloud. Police called it a tornado. No one was injured.

Firefighters, volunteers and school officials removed items from the school.

The National Weather Service said gusty winds will start to die down today.

Water main break shuts part of street

Police shut down Kaiulani Avenue between Koa and Kuhio avenues last night because of a 12-inch water main break at about 6 p.m.

Some lanes were reopened by about 8:20 p.m. The Board of Water Supply said one mauka-bound lane remained closed while crews repaired the damage. One apartment and two homes were without water.

Driver allegedly hits man with car

Police arrested a 19-year-old man who allegedly hit another man with his car.

Police said that at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, the suspect was blocking the roadway with his vehicle near Kona and Keeaumoku streets at Ala Moana Center. The 51-year-old victim was unable to leave and called police.

When the suspect tried to flee, police said the victim stepped in front of the suspect's vehicle and told him to wait. The suspect allegedly bumped the victim with his car. The victim suffered minor injuries, police said.

Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of second-degree assault.
