Wichmann wins WAC pentathlon again

Hawaii's Annett Wichmann won her third straight Western Athletic Conference pentathlon title yesterday on the first day of the indoor championships.

Teammate Emily Sheppard placed fourth.

Wichmann finished with 4,034 points, 16 shy of automatic qualification into the NCAA Indoor Championships. Her mark ranks seventh nationally and the top 16 automatic and provisional qualifiers earn spots at the nationals.

Wichmann won the shot put (46 feet, 4 inches) and long jump (18-1), and placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.98) and high jump (5 feet, 7 1/2 inches), and finished third in the 800-meter run (2:36.23).

Sheppard won the high jump (5-9 3/4 ).

Hawaii is tied with Idaho at the top of the team standings with 15 points each.

UH's Friesen breaks WAC diving record

Hawaii's Emma Friesen broke the Western Athletic Conference's 1-meter diving record yesterday at the league's swimming and diving championships at San Antonio.

Friesen scored 338.40 points to win the event for the third straight year.

The Rainbow Wahine team of Karli Rice, Victoria Tan, Maura Barrett and Elliko Heimbach won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1 minute, 32.91 seconds.

Hawaii sits in third place at 183 points, behind Northern Arizona (245) and Nevada (211) going into today's events.

Hawaii swimmers remain in second

Hawaii kept its hold on second place at the Conference USA Championships in Houston yesterday.

The Rainbow Warriors' Horativ Anastasescu finished third in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.28 seconds.

It was one of many top-eight performances by UH athletes. Davis Kane was fifth and Sean Reilly sixth in the 50 free.

In the 500 free, Andrew Muller took fifth place and Kalen Darling placed eighth.

UH's Nicola Xella finished fourth in the 200-yard medley, followed by teammates John Ariens in sixth and Lazar Bogdanovski in eighth.

SMU leads the event with 320 points. Hawaii has 244.5 points.

Brennan to appear at quickness clinic

Former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan is scheduled to take part in one of this weekend's Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinics on the UH campus.

Brennan, now a member of the Washington Redskins, will be among the clinic instructors tomorrow or Sunday. The clinics are 8:30 to 10 a.m. Registration starts at 8 a.m. at Klum Gym.

Wahine victorious in softball exhibition

In an exhibition game yesterday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, the Hawaii softball team defeated Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education 9-5.

Stephanie Ricketts, one of three freshman pitchers to appear in the game, picked up the win for the Rainbow Wahine.

Audrey Andrade, Kanani Puu-Warren and Tanisha Milca each hit three-run homers to bring in the nine UH runs.

HPU beats Cal Poly Pomona in tennis

Hawaii Pacific swept all six singles matches en route to an 8-1 victory over Cal Poly Pomona yesterday at Pomona, Calif.

Daniel Luedl, Nikola Petrov, Sebastian Bader and Jan Hroch won doubles and singles matches for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 2-0.

The Broncos dropped to 4-4.
