A car hit three people near the recycling center in Napili, Maui, yesterday, critically injuring a 21-year-old Wailuku man and causing minor injuries to a girl and a woman.

All three were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The man is a Maui Disposal employee who was working at the recycling center, and the two female victims were visiting the center to recycle items, said police Lt. Robert Hill.

Hill said the vehicle was driven by an 85-year-old Lahaina man who was not injured.

He said the driver had arrived at the center to recycle items.

Would-be robber remains at large

Police are asking the public to help find a man wanted for the attempted robbery of Ben Bridge Jeweler at Ala Moana Center.

At about 10:25 a.m. Saturday, the man asked to see the most expensive watches and tried to run out after a salesperson put one of them on his wrist, police said.

A security guard stopped the man and struggled with him before he brandished a knife. The security officer disarmed him and made him drop the watch.

The man then fled into the mall.

Police described him as in his 20s, 5 feet 3 to 5 feet 5 inches tall, between 140 and 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts, black slippers and glasses.

Anyone with information about the attempted robbery is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME from a cellular phone.
