Farrington flattens 'Iolani

The 'Iolani girls basketball team is a guard-oriented squad that relies heavily on its backcourt. The Farrington girls basketball team, with frontcourt size to boot, pounds the ball inside and lets its height do the heavy lifting.

So when the two teams met in the Division I quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships at Kaimuki, something had to give. Unfortunately for 'Iolani, the Raiders' guards weren't enough to offset the Governors' Goliaths inside, and third-seeded Farrington cruised to a 68-51 victory yesterday and a semifinal berth against Konawaena today.

With Sofia Folaumahina (6-foot), Kirsten Liana (5 -11) and Lusina Otineru (5-10), the Governors dominated the paint against 'Iolani's swarming, pesky defense. Those three frontcourt players combined for 31 points, 26 rebounds, four blocks and a lot of headaches for 'Iolani.

“;Farrington is tough,”; said 'Iolani coach Marlene Zeug. “;They've got size, they've got speed and they're athletic. It's always going to be a tough matchup for us because we're always challenged by size.”;

With five players standing 5-foot-9 and taller, the Governors outrebounded 'Iolani 60-41. They grabbed a whopping 20 offensive boards on just 32 misses. They forced 'Iolani into committing 27 personal fouls and went to the free-throw line 34 times.

“;Our team is all about the inside game, where our guards just pass us the ball on the inside and the big men just do our job inside,”; said Liana, a sophomore who finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

But it was Farrington's guards who broke open a tight game after halftime. Leading 29-24 at the midgame break, the Governors put an 18-4 run on 'Iolani to end the third quarter that put the game out of reach. Farrington's guards accounted for 13 of those 18 points.

That the game was even close at halftime is a credit to 'Iolani's “;scrappy”; play, said Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu. While Farrington's Big Three inside combined for 18 points and 15 rebounds, the Raiders countered with a perimeter attack, led by Tami Konishi's three 3-pointers.

But 'Iolani's 3s stopped dropping in the second half, and Farrington's interior strength eventually won out.

“;We wanted to pound the ball inside,”; Tatupu said, “;and take advantage of the size advantage that we had.”;

The second-seeded Wildcats earned yet another Division I state semifinal berth with an easy win over the Bears yesterday at Kaimuki. Konawaena, which won state titles in 2004 and 2007, is making its fifth Division I semifinal appearance in the last six years.

“;It's nice to be back,”; said Konawaena assistant coach Donald Awa.

The Wildcats were led by dynamic, athletic freshman Emalia Galdeira, who just missed out on a triple-double with 17 points, 10 steals and eight rebounds. She also pitched in with five assists in just 24 minutes.

Konawaena, representing the BIIF, will play Farrington today in the semis. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
