Kalaheo lights up in the second half to stop Campbell

As far as Kalaheo is concerned, the more mileage the better.
A second-half surge powered the Mustangs to a 76-57 win at Campbell last night in an elimination game in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference boys basketball tournament. It earned Kalaheo another lengthy trek today, this time to the North Shore to face Kahuku.
“;We're getting all those frequent-driving miles,”; Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said before the Mustangs boarded their bus for the ride from Ewa Beach back to Kailua. “;As long as we keep playing, that's cool.”;
The survivor of today's game between the Mustangs and Red Raiders moves to meet Kaimuki—resting up for its shot at the league title—tomorrow. A Bulldogs loss would force a decisive game Saturday.
Kalaheo advanced in the double-elimination tournament last night by breaking open a tight game in the fourth quarter to defeat the Sabers for the second time in less than a week.
Trailing 48-45 with 2:15 left in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs stepped on the gas and used a 23-4 run to pull away from Campbell.
Kalaheo guard Aaron Fernandez scored 11 of his team-high 18 points in the second half to lead four Mustangs in double figures. Point guard Richard Preza Haynes finished with 13 points, and Furtado credited his direction of the Kalaheo offense for sparking the run by penetrating to the basket for layups or dishing off to set up his teammates for scores.
Preza Haynes helped the Mustangs take advantage of their size in the post by feeding forwards Christian Kepa and Matt Gasparine-Young in the paint. Kepa finished with 17 points while Gasparine-Young bulled his way to 15, most coming off offensive rebounds.
“;We're capable of that from time to time. It's again this roller-coaster of inconsistency,”; Furtado said. “;When we play our best basketball, that's what we look like. When we play our worst, then you can see that too. We just turned it on at the right time.”;
Defensively, Kalaheo stayed in a zone in an effort to contain Campbell's guard combo of Zachery and Kristian Manuel, who combined for 51 in last week's 72-65 loss to the Mustangs.
Kristian Manuel hit four 3-pointers over the zone on his way to a game-high 22 points. But the Mustangs were more concerned with cutting off their lanes to the basket.
“;The last time we played them (man-to-man), they penetrated and they hit 3s,”; Furtado said. “;Today we decided if they're going to hit 3s with a hand in their face we'll deal with that, we just didn't want anything to the bucket.”;
