4 join Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame

The Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame added four new members last night with the induction of its Class of 2009 during a banquet at the Honolulu Country Club.

Joining 106 of Hawaii's top athletes and sports contributors were former world champion surfer Lynne Boyer; Dae Sung Lee, taekwondo coach; Gerry Lopez, surfing pioneer and Albert Silva, boxing contributor.

UH may head to Maui in spring

The Hawaii football team's spring plans could include a trip to Maui.

Although plans have not been finalized and a date has yet to be set, UH athletic director Jim Donovan said the school is working on having the Warriors take a trip to the Valley Isle for a scrimmage and autograph session during the team's spring practice schedule.

“;We're hopeful of making something happen, but it's not a done deal yet,”; Donovan said.

The Warriors last appeared on Maui in their 2001 season opener against Montana at War Memorial Stadium.

The Warriors open spring practice on March 30 and will have 15 practices, closing with a spring game April 25 at Aloha Stadium.

The spring schedule will also include a clinic for high school coaches on April 18 and the program's first “;junior day,”; an event giving high school juniors a chance to familiarize themselves with the campus and the program.

Ueoka is medalist at Fresno tourney

Santa Clara sophomore Miki Ueoka (Kauai '07) led wire to wire to earn medalist honors at the Lexus Classic hosted by Fresno State yesterday in Fresno, Calif.

Ueoka carded a 72—209 to finish three strokes ahead of the field. Hawaii senior Carolina Perez shot a 74—220 to tie for eighth.

UC Irvine won the 13-team event with an 891. The Rainbow Wahine finished 11th at 943.

Rainbow Wahine fall in tennis

The Hawaii women's tennis team fell to 2-3 during its five-match road trip with yesterday's 6-1 loss to San Diego.

Sophomore Natasha Zorec, at No. 2 singles, got the lone victory for the Wahine (2-5) against the Toreros (4-0). Zorec was leading 6-4, 5-0 when Samantha Mouly retired.

Chaminade trips Hawaii Pacific in hoops

Noah Gottlieb and Mohamed Tangara each had 14 points to lead Chaminade past Hawaii Pacific 89-76 in a nonconference men's basketball game at McCabe Gym last night.

Joel Smith, Cartier Carter and Rickey Claybor all added 13 points for the Silverswords.

Mike Helton and Adrian den Dulk scored 16 points each for the Sea Warriors (9-13).

» In the earlier women's game, Tiffany Wilson scored 25 points to lead Hawaii Pacific over Chaminade 75-55.

Wilson also had a team-high seven rebounds for the Sea Warriors (12-13). Jasmine Dulan scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds for the Silverswords (0-23).

The Seasiders (21-1, 11-0 PacWest) received 184 points and remain behind top-ranked Findlay (24-0) and LIU-C.W. Post (22-0) in the rankings. BYUH clinched the PWC title last week as well as the automatic berth into the regional.

Hawaii Pacific, BYUH tie in men's golf

Led by Charlie Renfro's 1-over 73, the Hawaii Pacific men's golf team tied Brigham Young during yesterday's match at the Ewa Beach Golf Course.

The Sea Warriors (0-2-1) had lost the last two meetings with the Seasiders (2-0-1).

Kyle Kunioka led BYUH with a 73. Layne Morita carded a 74 for Chaminade, which did not have enough golfers for a team score.

Vulcans sweep Knights in baseball

Peter Rodgers' two-run double to center highlighted a four-run first, and Hawaii-Hilo rolled past Academy of Art 12-2 in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

The Vulcans (4-3) completed a sweep of the Urban Knights (0-9) with a 7-5 win in the second game. Keoni Manago's two-run homer to left keyed a four-run fourth that put Hilo ahead for good.

In the opener, Matt Haasenritter cleared the bases with a double to right in the second inning for three of his game-high four RBIs.
