Chinatown race benefits theater

Ready for a romp through Chinatown? Hawaii Theatre's third annual Chinatown Chase takes place Saturday, with funds going to the downtown theater's student outreach educational programs.

Following clues and solving riddles, the chase will take teams of 10 through neighborhood galleries, watering holes, landmarks and restaurants as they race to the finish line on Bethel Street.

Cost is $1,500 per team. A premium price of $2,500 or $5,000 per team includes a private party at nearby thirtyninehotel.

Scholar discusses impact of paper

The long history of paper and its impact on the Islamic world is the subject of a lecture by Jonathan M. Bloom, 4 p.m. Saturday at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Bloom is the author of “;Paper Before Print: The History and Impact of Paper in the Islamic World.”; His illustrated talk will explain how Muslims carried paper and paper-making technology from China to the West.
